Chapter 2 - The Locked Study

The heavy oak door of Luca's private study clicked shut behind me, sealing out the muted echoes of the party still drifting through the southern wing of the mansion. I stood in the center of the dark-paneled room, my heart hammering against my ribs. The air smelled of old leather, cedar, and expensive bourbon. Carefully, as if handling fragile glass, I laid the ruined ivory gown across the leather Chesterfield sofa. The dirt stains near the hem looked darker under the desk lamp, and the torn lace sleeves seemed to accuse me of an intrusion I had never intended to make.
A sharp rap sounded at the door exactly three minutes after I had set the dress down. Before I could move, the brass handle turned and Vanessa slipped inside, closing the door firmly behind her. The red off-the-shoulder gown swirled around her ankles like spilled wine, and her diamond earrings caught the lamplight as she tilted her chin down at me. The polite society mask had vanished, leaving only a cold, predatory narrowness in her blue eyes.
"You've played your little game, girl," Vanessa said, keeping her voice to a venomous whisper as she glided closer to the sofa. "Now listen to me very carefully. You're going to take that rag back down to the laundry incinerator, and you're going to tell Mr. Moretti that you found it in a garbage bin outside."
I stepped instinctively between Vanessa and the sofa, my hands smoothing the black fabric of my maid's dress. "I can't do that, ma'am. Mr. Moretti asked me to wait here with the dress."
Vanessa scoffed, her fingernails tapping against the polished wood of the writing desk. "Don't play the loyal servant with me. I know your type. You think a dramatic stunt with an old family heirloom is going to buy you a better position in this house? A bigger tip? Let me tell you what you're actually going to get." She reached into the sequined clutch hanging from her wrist and pulled out a thick envelope bound with a rubber band. "Five thousand dollars in cash. Tax-free. You pack your bags tonight, catch the early bus out of town, and you forget you ever set foot in the basement archives."
I stared at the envelope, then up at her face. The sheer contempt in her eyes wasn't just about a ruined dress; it was about control, about protecting a fragile narrative she had spent years building around Luca.
"It's not about the money," I said quietly, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. "He recognized it. He knew whose dress it was."

"He's grieving a ghost," Vanessa hissed, taking a sharp step forward and invading my personal space. The scent of her expensive perfume was cloying, almost sickening. "And if you interfere with our wedding any further, I'll make sure you never work in this state again. I'll ruin you so thoroughly you'll be begging on the highway by sunrise."
Before I could reply, the faint click of a key turning in the exterior hallway lock made Vanessa freeze. Her expression instantly shifted from venomous rage to a trembling, fragile concern. She dabbed rapidly at the corner of her dry eye with an embroidered handkerchief just as the door swung open.
