Chapter 11 - The Secret Compartment

The heavy oak door of the family suite clicked shut behind us, sealing off the echoing chaos of the shattered foyer. Luca had insisted I move into the private wing after the break-in, and though every instinct told me to return to the staff quarters, I knew the physical threat had escalated beyond a simple workplace dispute. Whoever had smashed the display case wasn't just trying to intimidate us anymore; they wanted the physical evidence of Sofia Moretti's legacy gone for good.

Luca crossed the plush carpet toward the antique writing desk, setting a heavy brass lantern down before turning to face me. His black suit jacket was discarded, his white shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal the intricate dark tattoos wrapping around his forearms. He looked exhausted, the shadows beneath his dark eyes deep and unyielding, yet his gaze remained fiercely focused on my face.

"You're shaking," Luca said softly, his voice dropping into a low, steady register as he stepped closer. "You've been through hell these past two weeks, Emma, and I brought you right into the middle of a war."

"I'm not shaking from fear," I murmured, clutching the canvas garment bag I had managed to salvage from the back of the service closet before the thieves could reach it. "I'm shaking because I know why they broke in tonight. They weren't just looking for the dress on the mannequin. They were looking for what's inside it."

Luca’s brow furrowed sharply. He stepped closer, the warmth of his body radiating against the cool night air drifting through the cracked balcony window. "What are you talking about?"

I laid the heavy garment bag flat across the mahogany desk and unzipped the faded ivory lace. The torn sleeves and dirt stains were still there, silent witnesses to Vanessa's malice, but my fingers immediately sought out the heavy satin inner seam along the waistline. During our earlier cleaning session, I had felt an unusual rigidness beneath the lining—something thicker than normal boning.

Using a small sewing seam-ripper from the estate's mending kit, I carefully snipped through three tight stitches of blue floral embroidery. Inside the concealed pocket, wrapped in oiled yellow parchment, lay a small, leather-bound diary with cracked spine edges.

"My mother's journal," Luca breathed, his hand trembling as he reached out and touched the embossed gold lettering on the worn leather cover. "She kept this locked in her studio before she passed. I thought it was lost when the estate was audited years ago."

I pulled the journal free, the old paper smelling faintly of dried lavender and ink. As Luca carefully opened the cover, a folded ledger page slipped out, detailing financial transactions from twenty-five years ago. The names written in the margin weren't anonymous creditors; they were tied directly to the family trusts that had funded Vanessa's elite upbringing.

"It wasn't just a wedding dress," I whispered, looking up into Luca's dark, stunned eyes. "Your mother knew how Vanessa's family acquired their wealth. She documented every single transfer. That's why Vanessa hated this dress. It's not just a reminder of the past—it's a receipt."

Luca stared down at the faded ink, his jaw tightening until the skin stretched white over his cheekbones. The weight of the discovery hung heavily in the quiet room, transforming our search from a personal grievance into an unyielding quest for absolute truth.
