Chapter 13 - The Grand Ballroom

The crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom blazed with artificial brilliance, casting dazzling reflections across the polished parquet floor where hundreds of society elites mingled in designer tuxedos and glittering evening gowns. A string quartet played softly from the elevated balcony, though the ambient noise of clinking champagne flutes and polite laughter barely masked the underlying tension humming through the room.
I stood in the staging alcove just off the main hall, my hands resting steadily on the custom walnut display case we had brought down from the study. Inside, behind thick, pristine glass, the vintage ivory wedding dress sat illuminated by soft museum-grade spotlights. The torn sleeves had been meticulously mended with invisible reinforcement stitches, the dirt stains entirely lifted, and the embroidered blue flowers caught the light with vivid, heartbreaking clarity.
Across the room, standing near the mahogany wet bar, Vanessa held court in her striking red off-the-shoulder gown, her diamond necklace flashing as she laughed brightly with a group of county commissioners. She looked every bit the triumphant hostess, completely unaware of the dark cloud gathering directly above her head.
The mahogany side doors swung open, and a hush rolled through the nearest tables as Luca stepped onto the floor. He wore his black double-breasted suit, his slicked-back hair catching the chandelier light, but his expression was entirely devoid of the polite, accommodating charm he usually wore at these charity functions. He didn't walk toward Vanessa; instead, he walked straight toward the elevated dais at the front of the room, flanked by two private security guards.
As Luca stepped up to the mahogany podium, the string quartet faded into silence. The murmurs died down one by one until the vast ballroom was so quiet you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents overhead.

Luca adjusted the microphone, his deep, steady voice cutting through the cavernous space like a blade. "Good evening, everyone. Thank you for coming to support the Moretti Foundation tonight. Before we begin our annual auction, there is an urgent matter of estate history and property recovery that requires my personal attention—and yours."
Across the room, Vanessa's smile faltered. Her glass paused halfway to her lips, her eyes locking onto Luca with sudden, sharp panic.
