Chapter 3 - The Rain-Slicked Escape

The rain fell harder as Vance navigated the unmarked black sedan through the labyrinth of back alleys behind the financial district. I sat in the backseat beside Adrian, the city lights streaking across the tinted windows in long smears of red and gold. Adrian had his laptop open on his knees, the screen casting a pale blue glow over his sharp features as he reviewed the encrypted security logs from the penthouse elevators.

"Marcus was on duty during the time Miller was killed," Adrian murmured, his fingers flying across the keyboard with calculated precision. "He signed off on the maintenance log at eleven PM, right when the cameras went dark for four minutes."

My heart hammered against my ribs. Marcus had been my father's right-hand man for five years—always smiling, always offering condolences, always wearing an expensive suit and playing the loyal lieutenant. "Marcus helped plan the wedding reception," I said, my voice barely audible above the hum of the engine. "He handed me the florist contracts himself."

Adrian looked up from the screen, his jaw set. "A traitor always hides behind a smile," he said quietly. He reached across the leather seat and took my cold hand in his, warming my fingers with his palm. "When we get to the pier storage unit, we'll open that lockbox. Your father's letter said the key unlocks the truth. We're going to find out if Marcus signed his own death warrant."

The car turned sharply onto a gravel road leading toward the old maritime shipping district. The smell of salt water and diesel fuel filled the air as the skeletal cranes of the harbor loomed out of the fog like jagged iron teeth. Vance killed the headlights two blocks before the entrance, coasting the sedan into the shadows of an abandoned brick warehouse. We stepped out into the steady downpour, the cold rain instantly dampening the lace of my wedding sleeves. Adrian kept me close against his side, his arm a solid barrier against the wind as we hurried toward the rusted corrugated metal door of Unit 404.
