Chapter 1 - The Weight Of A Secret

The ringtone of Adrian's smartphone cut through the heavy silence of the penthouse suite like broken glass. I stood frozen near the edge of the king-sized bed, my fingers still brushing against the sheer lace sleeves of my ivory wedding gown. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city skyline pulsed with cold neon lights, indifferent to the storm brewing inside the room. Adrian didn't look away from me as he pulled the phone from his tuxedo jacket. His dark styled hair caught the amber glow of the wall sconces, and his clean-shaved jaw tightened until the slight stubble shadowed a stark, rigid line.
"Boss, we found a body downstairs," Vance's voice crackled through the speaker, low and jagged with urgency. "Service entrance near the loading dock. Security cameras were looped."
Adrian's dark eyes locked onto mine. The small metal key I had pressed into his palm moments ago felt heavy against his skin, a cold reminder of what my father had left behind. He answered Vance without breaking eye contact with me. "Lock down the freight elevators and seal the perimeter. Nobody enters or leaves until I come down." He ended the call with a sharp tap of his thumb and slid the phone back into his pocket. The air between us felt thin, charged with a danger that had nothing to do with rival syndicates and everything to do with betrayal from within.

"Get your coat," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register that brook no argument. He stepped closer, the black fabric of his tuxedo jacket brushing against the folds of my wedding veil. "Tonight, you don't leave my side. Not for a second."
I nodded, my throat tight as I reached for the heavy velvet wrap resting on the armchair. The confession I had delivered—that my father gave me a letter three days before he died, and that the proof of a traitor was sewn inside my wedding gown—had fundamentally altered the ground beneath our feet. We were no longer just business partners in an arranged marriage of convenience. We were targets in a silent war. Adrian grabbed my hand, his grip firm and grounding, and pulled me toward the private corridor leading away from the bedroom suite. Every shadow in the hallway suddenly looked like an enemy waiting in the ambush.
