Chapter 6 - The Broken Locket

Dawn broke gray and misty over the pine forest. Julian was outside on the cabin porch, stripping down his weapon to clean the moisture from the coastal air. His hands moved with mechanical precision, but his mind was elsewhere.

The cabin door squeaked open. Lily stepped onto the porch, rubbing her eyes. She had finally taken off the yellow hood, revealing a riot of unbrushed blonde curls that reminded Julian so vividly of Clara that it made his throat tight.

She approached him cautiously, sitting down on the wooden step three feet away.

“Are you a bad man?” she asked innocently.

Julian paused, holding the slide of his firearm. He looked down at his tattooed arms, covered in marks of violence and loyalty to men who were now dead.

“I used to be,” Julian said honestly. “I made a lot of bad choices, Lily. I hurt people, and I spent a long time being angry.”

“Mom said you were an angel who lost his wings,” Lily said, swinging her small feet over the porch edge.

Julian’s breath caught. He stared at her, stunned. “She... said that?”

Lily nodded. She reached inside her yellow coat pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver locket on a broken chain. “Mom gave me this before the ambulance took her. She said when I was big enough, I had to find the man inside.”

She held it out to him.

Julian’s hands, steady during gunfights and interrogations, shook as he took the locket. He pressed the clasp. Inside was a tiny, faded photograph of Julian when he was twenty-two, smiling—something he hadn't done in over a decade—with his arm around a laughing Clara.

Opposite the photograph was an inscription: Always with you, Julian.

Julian swallowed the knot in his throat. He looked at the girl who carried his blood, Clara’s heart, and five years of stolen time.

“Your mom was the bravest person in the world,” Julian said, his voice cracking.

Lily smiled, a soft, radiant expression that cut straight through his defenses. “Are you going to be my angel now?”

Julian closed the locket and gently placed it back into her small palm. “I’ll be whatever you need me to be, Lily. I promise.”
