Chapter 5 - Safe Haven

An hour later, Julian’s sedan cut through the pitch-black backroads of the Oregon coast. The rhythmic thump of the windshield wipers was the only sound in the vehicle.

In the back seat, Lily had finally succumbed to exhaustion, curled up beneath Julian’s heavy overcoat, still refusing to take off her yellow raincoat. Evelyn sat beside her, staring blankly out the window, watching the endless pines blur past.

“Where are you taking us?” Evelyn asked, her voice hollow.

“A safe house Clara knew about,” Julian answered. “An old logging cabin near the river. Nobody knows the deed belongs to me. It’s off the grid.”

“And then what, Julian?” Evelyn turned to him, her eyes burning with bitter anger. “You shoot everyone who comes? You think a child can live like this? Clara lived in fear every single day. Every knock on the door made her chest hurt. Her heart gave out because she spent five years waiting for your sins to catch up with her!”

The words landed like physical blows against Julian’s ribs. He didn't defend himself. He gripped the steering wheel until the leather groaned beneath his knuckles.

“You’re right,” Julian said quietly. “Clara didn't deserve any of it. But I didn't ask her to run alone. If I had known Lily existed, I would have burned Dominic’s empire to ashes five years ago.”

“Well, you didn't,” Evelyn snapped, tears spilling down her cheeks. “And now she’s gone.”

Julian looked in the rearview mirror. Lily shifted in her sleep, her tiny brow furrowed as if caught in a bad dream. She clutched the corner of Julian’s wool coat, seeking warmth from a father she didn't know existed.

“I won't fail her twice,” Julian whispered into the dark.

By 3:00 AM, they pulled up to the rustic cabin nestled deep within the coastal redwoods. Julian cleared the perimeter, secured the locks, and carried Lily inside. As he laid her gently on the spare bed, her hand reached out, instinctively grabbing his inked thumb.

“Don’t leave, mister,” she mumbled through the haze of sleep.

Julian knelt by the bedside, letting her tiny fingers wrap around his scarred skin. “I’m not going anywhere, Lily. I’m right here.”
