Chapter 13 - The Yellow Coat

Julian dropped to both knees on the cold marble, ignoring the sharp, tearing fire in his wounded shoulder. He caught Lily as she collided with his chest, lifting her up into his arms.

She wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, burying her face into his sweater. Julian held her tightly, burying his face in her blonde curls, his broad back shaking as tears finally escaped his eyes.

For the first time in his life, Julian Vance wept—not out of grief, but out of absolute, overwhelming salvation.

“You came back,” Lily whispered into his ear.

“I told you I would,” Julian choked out, his voice thick with emotion. “I’ll always come back for you, Lily.”

Evelyn walked down the aisle, her hands trembling as she approached them. She looked at Julian’s bruised face, then down at the blood faintly seeping through the dark wool of his sweater. She didn't ask what had happened at the cannery; the quiet certainty in his eyes told her everything she needed to know. The shadow had lifted.

“It’s over?” Evelyn asked in a whisper.

“It’s over,” Julian replied, standing slowly while keeping Lily securely perched on his hip. “Dominic won't ever hurt anyone again. His organization is scattered. You and Lily are free.”

Evelyn reached out, her hand resting gently on Julian’s tattooed arm. The anger and resentment that had fueled her for five years had finally burned out, leaving only profound gratitude.

“Thank you, Julian,” she whispered, her eyes filling with fresh tears. “Clara was right about you. She always said you were just waiting for a reason to come home.”

Lily pulled back, looking at Julian’s face. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a clean, folded yellow raincoat.

“You’re shivering, Dad,” she said solemnly, trying to drape her tiny coat over his massive shoulders. “You need this more than me.”

Julian laughed through his tears—a real, genuine sound that echoed through the sacred hall. He kissed her forehead gently. “I think you wear it much better than I do, little bird.”
