Chapter 14 - Clara’s Meadow

Three weeks later, the gray coastal rains had given way to an early spring.

High up in the Willamette Valley, on a gentle hill overlooking acres of blooming wildflowers and rolling green pastures, sat a modest white farmhouse. The air was sweet with cedar and blooming clover.

Julian stood on the wide wrap-around porch, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. His shoulder had healed to a jagged pink scar, joining the constellation of his past, but his eyes were no longer cold. The perpetual tension in his jaw had relaxed into a quiet, grounded peace.

Down in the yard, Evelyn was hanging fresh laundry on the line, laughing as the mountain breeze caught a white bedsheet.

Nearby, Lily was chasing a golden retriever puppy through the tall grass, her bright yellow raincoat fluttering behind her like the wings of a small bird. Her joyful laughter carried across the valley, filling the vast empty spaces of the country with pure life.

Julian stepped off the porch and walked to the edge of the hill where an ancient oak tree stood. Beneath its sprawling branches rested a polished granite headstone, surrounded by fresh white roses.

Julian knelt beside the stone. He placed his hand on the cool granite, the morning sun warming his back.

“You did it, Clara,” Julian whispered softly to the wind. “She’s safe. She has your smile, and she has your laugh. I’m going to make sure she has the whole world, too.”
