Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Deceit

The weight of the heavy black leather ledger pressed hard against my ribs beneath the fabric of my white apron. Every step I took up the narrow, concrete basement stairs felt heavy, as if the dark secrets tucked into my pockets carried a physical gravity of their own. I reached the landing, pushed open the heavy service door, and stepped back into the sunlit warmth of the mansion's main corridor. The contrast between the damp shadows below and the opulent, crystal-chandeliered hallways above felt symbolic of everything Patricia had built here: a glittering facade masking a rot of calculated isolation.

I hurried toward the grand study, where Luca had retreated after suspending Patricia earlier that morning. My heart hammered a rhythmic, anxious beat against my chest. The evidence I held wasn't just a collection of missed mail; it was a map of manipulation, proving beyond a doubt that the head maid had systematically severed the ties between mother and son. As I approached the heavy oak double doors, I paused to catch my breath, smoothing down my black uniform and securing the stray locks of brown hair beneath my gold clip. I lifted my hand and rapped twice on the polished wood.

"Come in," Luca's voice called out from within, sounding tight with exhaustion and unresolved fury.

I pushed the door open and stepped into the sprawling, wood-paneled room. Luca stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the sparkling expanse of the city skyline and the water beyond. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean tension in his frame. He turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intense, searching gaze.

"Claire. Did you find something down there?" he asked, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register.

Without a word, I reached beneath my apron, pulled out the thick stack of heavy linen envelopes bound in red rubber bands, and placed them gently on the mahogany desk beside the leather ledger. The sight of his own handwriting on the topmost envelope stopped him mid-stride. Luca crossed the room in three long strides, his fingers trembling slightly as he picked up the bundle. He traced the sharp, unfamiliar ink of Patricia's 'Return to Sender' note stamped across the corner. His jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

"She kept these," he said, the words slipping out as a harsh, quiet whisper. "Every single one of them. For months."

"She intercepted them before they ever reached your mother," I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in my veins. "And she told your mother that you simply stopped caring, that you had abandoned her to focus on your business and your life outside these walls. It broke Eleanor's heart, Mr. Luca. She sat by that window every single day, weeping because she thought her only son had forgotten her."

Luca looked up from the letters, his eyes burning with a dark, dangerous fire that had nothing to do with business and everything to do with family. He flipped open the black ledger, revealing meticulous notes detailing schedules of blocked phone calls, intercepted visitors, and medical dosage charts that suggested Patricia had been keeping Eleanor in a perpetual state of foggy vulnerability.

"She went too far," Luca muttered, slamming the ledger shut with a hollow thud that echoed off the high ceiling. He looked directly at me, his expression softening into one of profound gratitude and fierce resolve. "You risked your position down there to find this. Thank you, Claire. I owe you more than you know."

"You don't owe me anything," I replied softly, shaking my head. "I just wanted to make things right for Eleanor."

"It stops today," Luca declared, his voice dropping into an unyielding tone of absolute authority. "We are going to clean house. Every single person loyal to Patricia's little regime is going to find themselves out on the street by nightfall. And I want you right by my side while we do it."
