Chapter 15 - Morning Light

The morning sun poured through the massive bay windows of the upstairs sitting room, turning the polished hardwood floors to gold and casting a warm, luminous glow over the entire estate. Outside, the view of the water and the distant city skyline was crisp and clear, untainted by the shadows that had choked the halls for so long. The heavy medical wheelchair was positioned precisely where it belonged, angled toward the window so Eleanor could take in the morning breeze.

Eleanor sat upright in her seat, wearing her cream-colored blouse and pearl earrings, her cheeks flushed with healthy color and a gentle, peaceful smile gracing her lips. Her trembling hands rested quietly on the grey cushioning, no longer gripped in the agony of abandonment, but resting easy in the light of absolute truth.

Luca stood just behind her right shoulder, one hand resting lightly on the polished arm of the chair while the other held a fresh, perfectly arranged bouquet of white roses. He wasn't rushing off to board meetings or dodging phone calls; he was right here, sharing a quiet laugh with his mother as they recalled a childhood story about a clumsy golden retriever and a muddy rug.

I stood a few paces away, smoothing down the front of my black maid dress and white apron, watching them with a profound sense of peace settling deep in my chest. The household was different now. The staff was honest, the fraudulent accounts had been turned over to federal investigators, and the air in the mansion felt light, breathable, and clean.

Eleanor turned her head slowly, her bright eyes catching mine across the sunlit room. She beckoned me closer with a slight curl of her finger, her expression softening into deep affection. As I stepped forward and knelt beside her chair—just as I had on that first tearful day—she reached out and placed her warm, steady hand over mine.

"Thank you, Claire," Eleanor whispered, her voice clear and strong, carrying no trace of the sorrow that had once haunted these walls. "You brought my family back to me."

Luca leaned down, resting his cheek gently against his mother's white hair before looking up at me. His dark eyes met mine with a quiet, lingering intensity that promised a future far brighter than any of us had ever imagined. The deception was over, the house was restored, and for the first time in years, the mansion truly felt like a home.
