Chapter 14 - The Midnight Resolution

The midnight air rushed into the foyer, carrying the sharp scent of damp pavement and pine. Framed in the open doorway, the two men in dark overcoats blinked against the bright interior light, their hands instinctively hovering near their waistbands. One of them, a thick-set man with a jagged scar cutting across his left cheek, took half a step forward, his eyes darting past Luca to where I stood frozen near the staircase.

"We're looking for Patricia's files," the scarred man said, his voice a gravelly rasp that barely carried over the hum of the estate's security system. "She left some property behind. Personal items. We're here to collect."

Luca didn't move an inch. His broad shoulders blocked the threshold completely, and his posture radiated a cold, unyielding authority that made the two visitors hesitate. He didn't raise his voice, but every word fell like a lead weight on the marble floor. "Patricia doesn't live here anymore. And whatever she left behind belongs to this estate now. Turn around, get back in your sedan, and don't ever test the perimeter of this property again."

"You don't understand, friend," the second man muttered, stepping up beside his partner and sliding his hand deeper inside his coat. "We have an agreement with the old management. Papers need clearing out—"

"The only thing clearing out tonight is you," Luca interrupted, his voice dropping an octave as a heavy security detail materialized from the shadows of the side gallery. Three men in dark suits stepped into the light, their presence immediate and absolute. The two couriers froze, realizing in an instant that the power dynamic of the estate had completely flipped. Patricia's network was gone, and her foot soldiers had walked blindly into a trap.

The scarred man swallowed hard, his bravado dissolving into nervous sweat as he looked at the security guards blocking every exit route. Without another word, he exchanged a panicked glance with his partner, took a slow step backward, and disappeared into the darkness of the driveway. The heavy wooden door slammed shut with a resounding throb that echoed through the high-ceilinged hall.

Luca turned slowly, exhaling a long, measured breath, and met my gaze. The tension that had gripped the house for weeks seemed to snap, replaced by a quiet, steady calm. He walked over, the heavy gold signet ring catching the light as he reached out to gently touch my sleeve. "You okay?" he asked softly, his eyes searching my face for any trace of fear.

I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat, and managed a faint, genuine smile. "I'm okay, Luca. We're all okay."
