Chapter 13 - Midnight Visitors at the Gates

The grandfather clock in the downstairs hallway chimed midnight, its deep, resonant gongs echoing through the cavernous quiet of the mansion. I was standing in the ground-floor pantry pouring myself a glass of ice water when a sharp, rhythmic sound cut through the quiet night air. *Clack. Clack. Clack.* It was the sound of heavy iron security gates at the end of the estate's long, winding drive hitting their automated latches. My hand froze around the glass. Visitors at midnight were never a good sign, especially not after what we had uncovered in Patricia’s financial ledgers.

I set the glass down silently and hurried out into the main entrance foyer, my rubber-soled shoes making no sound against the marble floor. Through the tall, leaded glass windows beside the front door, I saw the twin beams of headlights sweeping across the front lawn as a sleek black sedan crawled up the circular drive and came to a stop near the grand double doors. The engine cut out, but the doors didn't open immediately. A heavy, threatening stillness hung over the vehicle, as if its occupants were sizing up the estate before making their move.

Before I could turn to head toward the study, the heavy oak front door shuddered under the force of a firm, deliberate knock. *Thud. Thud.* It wasn't the tentative knock of a lost traveler or a late courier; it was a summons. I backed away slowly, my hand instinctively brushing against the brass key tucked inside my apron pocket. Patricia’s associates weren't going to let their financial pipeline vanish quietly into the night. They had come to salvage whatever assets, documents, or leverage they thought was still hidden inside the house.

A door down the hall clicked open, and Luca stepped out into the foyer. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore, just his black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, but the silver flash of a heavy signet ring caught the dim light of the hallway. He didn't look surprised; if anything, he looked like a predator who had been waiting for the trap to spring. He glanced at me, his eyes dark and steady, silently gesturing for me to stay back near the grand staircase while he approached the heavy timber door.

Luca didn't hesitate. He grabbed the brass handle, turned it with a sharp click, and pulled the door wide open, letting the cold midnight wind sweep into the warm foyer. Framed in the doorway stood two unfamiliar men in dark overcoats, their faces half-shadowed by the porch light, holding a heavy leather briefcase between them. The standoff had arrived, and there was nowhere left to hide.
