Chapter 3 - Hallway Confessions And Quiet Trusts

Ten minutes later, Patricia had been escorted down to the lower service quarters under Luca’s strict orders, pending a full audit of the household records. Eleanor, exhausted by the sudden emotional upheaval, had finally drifted off to sleep in her room under the watchful care of a senior nurse. I found myself standing alone in the high-ceilinged hallway outside the master suite, staring out at the fading afternoon light dancing across the bay.

Footsteps approached from the corner, and I turned to see Luca walking toward me. Without his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, he looked less like an untouchable corporate executive and more like a son who had almost lost his mother to shadows he hadn't noticed.

"Claire," he said, stopping a few feet away. His expression was exhausted, carrying a heavy weight of guilt. "You took a significant risk back there. Patricia runs this house with an iron fist. Most of the staff wouldn't dare look her in the eye, let alone call her a liar."

"She was hurting your mother," I replied simply, keeping my hands folded neatly over my white apron. "That's not nursing, Mr. Vance. That's isolation."

Luca rubbed the back of his neck, letting out a long, slow breath. "Call me Luca. And you're right. I let my work take over, trusting the staff to manage the day-to-day while I was locked in boardrooms. I thought hiring a premium agency meant I didn't have to look behind the curtains." He paused, studying my face with a sharp, assessing gaze that made my skin tingle. "You noticed things the others missed. Why?"

"Because I actually talk to her," I said, meeting his gaze directly. "Not just about medication schedules or meal trays, but about what she likes, what she remembers. She misses her garden. She misses you."

A faint, sad smile touched the corners of Luca's mouth. "She used to sit by that exact window every afternoon when I was a boy. I thought... I thought keeping her here, with the best medical care money could buy, was enough." He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "The staff audit is going to take days. I need someone I can trust on this floor, Claire. Someone who isn't beholden to Patricia's clique. Will you help me monitor my mother's care directly?"

The offer hung between us, heavy with implication. It meant stepping into the crosshairs of a hostile domestic staff who had answered to Patricia for years. But looking at the quiet sincerity in Luca's eyes, I knew I couldn't walk away.
