Chapter 14 - Shattering the Glass

The junior waiter reached the Mistress's chair, extending a crystal goblet of mineral water resting on a polished silver tray. Something about the way his fingers gripped the rim of the tray tripped every alarm bell in my mind. His movements were too stiff, his expression too carefully neutral.
Before the glass could touch the Mistress's hand, I stepped forward and sharply knocked the tray upward. The crystal goblet flew off, shattering against the marble floor, the clear liquid hissing as it pooled across the stone.
Gasps rippled through the surrounding tables. Julian Vance paused mid-stride across the ballroom, his face instantly draining of color.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Vance snarled, marching over to the dais before Ronan could react. "Are the servants here completely unhinged now? Destroying property in front of the entire board?"
I looked down at the foaming puddle on the floor, then straight into Vance's panicked eyes. "You didn't want her thirsty, Mr. Vance. You wanted her poisoned. Just like Marcus tried to do with the estate accounts."
The ballroom descended into absolute, suffocating silence. Cameras flashed from the press gallery near the entrance, capturing every micro-expression of shock and realization. Vance stammered, opening and closing his mouth like a landed fish, unable to formulate a defense against the sudden, crushing weight of public exposure.
Ronan stepped between Vance and the dais, towering over the older man with an expression of cold, apocalyptic fury. "Security," Ronan said, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. "Escort Mr. Vance off the premises and hand him over to the federal agents waiting outside. And make sure he never sets foot in this city again."

Two private security contractors materialized instantly, gripping Vance by the arms and dragging him backward out of the ballroom as he cursed and thrashed. The elite guests watched in stunned awe, whispering behind gloved hands.
Ronan turned back to me, his stern mask entirely dissolved, replaced by an expression of raw, unvarnished devotion. He reached out, his long fingers gently cupping my cheek in front of hundreds of high-society witnesses, completely shattering every social convention and boundary he had ever maintained.
