Chapter 13 - The Foundation Gala

The annual Cain Foundation Charity Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the downtown heritage hotel, illuminated by cascading crystal chandeliers that mirrored the opulent lighting of the mansion. Hundreds of high-society guests in designer gowns and dark tuxedos milled around sipping champagne. I stood near the private VIP seating area, wearing a stunning floor-length black evening gown that Ronan had quietly insisted on providing for the occasion. It was a far cry from my white button-down shirt and black apron, though I still wore the silver ivy pin secured near my left shoulder.

The Elderly Mistress sat in a specially designated high-backed velvet armchair near the dais, wearing her signature black lace evening gown and pearl necklace. She looked radiant, her anxious micro-expressions replaced by a cool, regal poise as she communicated with me using subtle, practiced hand gestures. *Stay close to Ronan,* her fingers signaled to me as the string quartet swelled in the background. *The wolves are circling.*

Ronan appeared at my side, slipping a warm hand firmly against the small of my back to guide me through the crowded room. His touch anchored me amidst the sea of fake smiles and whispered gossip. "Don't let them intimidate you," he whispered near my ear, his breath warm against my skin. "You belong here just as much as any of them."

Across the ballroom, a rival estate owner named Julian Vance watched us with venomous intensity. Vance had been a silent financial partner to the disgraced accountant Marcus, and with Marcus locked away, Vance had lost his primary foothold in the Cain estate. He raised his champagne flute toward Ronan in a mocking toast before turning away toward the service bar.

"Keep your eyes on the Mistress's private water goblet," Ronan instructed me softly, his gaze never leaving Vance. "Vance is desperate, and desperate men make fatal mistakes."

I nodded, stepping closer to the Mistress's chair just as a junior waiter approached with a fresh silver tray. My heart hammered against my ribs, echoing the exact nervous tension of my first day in the mansion—only this time, I wasn't running away. I was ready.
