Chapter 1 - The Silver Tray

The silver serving tray felt heavier than it should have, its polished surface catching the harsh glare of the overhead crystal chandeliers and throwing fragmented prisms across the mahogany wainscoting of the mansion hallway. My palms were slick against the metal rim, my fingers trembling inside the black fabric of my gloves. Just ahead, seated in her high-backed velvet armchair, the Elderly Mistress stared straight ahead, her fingers twitching against the armrests in rapid, anxious micro-expressions that only I seemed to notice.
"Just ignore her," I murmured under my breath, my voice dropping to a low, nervous rasp meant entirely for her ears as I hurried my pace across the Persian runner.
The heavy dome lid wobbled on its circular track. A sudden draft from the tall arched windows, rattling against their panes in the fading afternoon light, caught me off guard. My black shoes skidded slightly on the polished hardwood border. I jerked to steady myself, but the momentum betrayed me. With a sharp, metallic crash that echoed off the high ceilings, the silver tray slipped from my grasp and slammed onto the floor, the dome lid rolling in a wide, erratic circle before coming to a rest against the baseboard.
Panic seized my chest. Without thinking of protocol, I dropped immediately to my knees, ignoring the sting of the hardwood against my shins. My eyes locked onto the Mistress's face. Her expression shifted from alarm to desperate urgency. In one fluid, practiced movement that defied our supposed station as temporary maid and employer, I raised my hands and began to form the precise sign language shapes we had silently rehearsed during my brief morning rounds. My fingers moved swiftly, spelling out reassurance in the quiet air between us.
"I understand," I mouthed silently, my hands gesturing the complex arc of safety and patience. She reached out, her frail fingers catching mine, pressing hard as if to anchor us both against the brewing storm.
A heavy footstep fell upon the parquet floor behind us.

The air in the long hallway instantly turned cold. Both of us jerked our heads upward, our breath catching in our throats as the dark figure stepped fully out from the shadowed entryway. Ronan Cain stood there, his tall frame clad in a sharply tailored black suit over a black shirt, his long dark hair falling slightly across a forehead creased with absolute fury. His gaze was fixed on our joined hands with a terrifying intensity.
"Who gave you permission to touch my mother?" Ronan's voice cut through the quiet room like a razor, cold, measured, and dangerously low.
