Chapter 10 - Unspoken Lines

The morning sun filtered through the tall leaded windows of the sitting room, casting long, geometric patterns of amber light across the polished oak floor. I stood by the sideboard, pouring fresh black coffee into a bone-china cup for the Elderly Mistress, but my hands felt unsteady. The memory of Ronan's touch in the dim hours of the night still lingered against my skin like a brand.

Ronan entered the room without his suit jacket, his black shirt collar open at the throat, holding a fresh dossier containing the decrypted offshore records from Marcus's terminal. He handed the folder to me instead of placing it on the desk, his fingers brushing against mine for a fraction of a second too long.

"The board has accepted Marcus's immediate resignation under threat of criminal prosecution," Ronan said, his voice even, though his eyes burned with private fire. "The remaining staff vetted through his agency are being replaced by private security contractors by noon. You won't have to worry about looking over your shoulder while you're tending to my mother."

I set the coffee cup down on the small side table next to the armchair. The Mistress smiled faintly, her fingers moving in a quick, teasing sign sequence that made my cheeks flush hot pink. Though I couldn't translate every gesture, her meaning was unmistakable, and it caused Ronan to clear his throat and look away with a rare, embarrassed stiffness.

"Mother, behave," Ronan muttered, though there was no heat in the warning. He turned his full attention back to me, closing the physical distance between us until I had nowhere left to retreat. "And as for you, Sadie—your temporary maid contract officially ends today."

My stomach dropped like a stone. After everything—the ledgers, the break-in, the shared secrets—was I simply being dismissed now that the immediate threat was neutralized?

"I'm terminating your agency placement," Ronan continued, his voice dropping lower, rich with a quiet, dangerous resolve as he reached out to gently touch the silver ivy leaf pinned securely to my white button-down shirt. "I'm hiring you directly. As my mother's permanent executive assistant, and... my personal partner in running this estate."

I looked up into his dark, unwavering eyes, realizing that the walls I had built to protect myself were crumbling entirely. There was no going back.

"And if I refuse?" I tested, my voice barely above a whisper.

Ronan smiled—a rare, devastatingly genuine expression that completely transformed his stern face. "You don't strike me as someone who runs from a challenge, Sadie. Not anymore."
