Chapter 7 - Breach in the Executive Corridor

We were twenty feet from Arthur's mahogany doors when the ceiling-mounted smoke detector above us clicked. It wasn't smoke. It was a digital sensor trip.
"Trap," Marcus hissed, spinning around as the corridor lights instantly shifted from dim amber to blinding, strobe-like emergency red. Alarms didn't sound—Arthur was too sophisticated for blaring sirens that alerted the whole building. Instead, silent red strobe lights pulsed against the smoked-glass windows, and heavy steel fire shutters dropped from the ceiling fifty yards behind us, sealing off the elevator bank.
"They knew we were coming," I gasped, my hand instinctively dropping to my flat stomach as the reality of the trap hit me.
"No," Dante said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he drew his weapon with a sharp, metallic click. "They didn't know *we* were coming. They were expecting a routine audit after I dumped those preliminary ledgers to the SEC. Arthur's just paranoid enough to lock down the floor at the first sign of digital intrusion."
Before Marcus could reach the manual override panel on the wall, the double doors to the corner conference room blew open. Three men in identical tailored charcoal suits—Arthur's elite private security detail—poured into the hallway. They weren't building guards; they were hardened mercenaries carrying short-barreled carbines, their faces expressionless under the flashing red lights.
"Down, Nora!" Dante shouted, shoving me hard against the doorframe of an empty office as the first round of gunfire tore through the quiet air.
The hallway erupted into a deafening roar of concussive sound. Shards of smoked glass rained down like coarse salt as bullets chewed through the decorative panels and corporate plaques. Marcus returned fire instantly, his submachine gun barking in sharp, controlled bursts that forced the lead mercenary to dive behind a marble pillar.
Dante moved like a shadow across the open corridor. He didn't hesitate or take cover; he closed the distance between himself and the second guard with terrifying speed. A muffled grunt of pain cut through the din as Dante deflected a rifle barrel with his left forearm, his tattooed fingers clamping around the man's throat with bone-crushing force. With a brutal twist, he disarmed the guard, using the man's own momentum to slam him into the reinforced glass wall until the glass shattered and the guard crumpled to the floor, unconscious.
"Marcus, cover the west stairwell!" Dante yelled over the ringing alarms, his dark eyes scanning the remaining smoke-filled hallway.

Marcus fired a final suppressing burst down the passage, driving the last two guards back into the conference room. "Main corridor is clear, boss! But we've got thirty seconds before the building security backup clears the lower security checkpoints!"
Dante didn't answer. He turned to me, his chest heaving slightly under his black shirt, his gaze fierce and protective. He grabbed my hand, his grip warm and unyielding. "We're out of time for stealth, Nora. Let's go meet Arthur."
