Chapter 10 - Sirens in the Gray Dawn

The low, oscillating wail of federal law enforcement sirens began to echo up from the dark street canyons far below, rising through the glass like the sound of an incoming tide. Red and blue emergency lights flashed against the mirrored skyscrapers across the avenue, painting the walls of Arthur Sullivan's executive suite in swirling crimson and sapphire hues.

Marcus stood by the shattered window, looking down at the street below through a pair of tactical binoculars. "Federal marshals have secured the ground-floor lobby and the service elevators. They're moving up to forty-two right now. No resistance from building security—once they saw the federal warrants, they dropped their weapons in the lobby."

Arthur remained slumped against the wall beneath the cracked panoramic window, his suit jacket torn, his hair disheveled, staring blankly at the polished floorboards. The invincible corporate titan was gone, reduced to an aging, terrified man waiting for handcuffs.

Dante turned away from him, his expression softening instantly as he looked down at me. The harsh, lethal tension that had defined his movements since we entered the building melted away. He reached out, his tattooed fingers gently cupping my cheek, his thumb brushing lightly across the remnants of the bruises along my jawline.

"It's over, Nora," Dante whispered, his voice thick with a quiet, profound relief that he hadn't allowed himself to feel until this exact second. "The war is finished. He can never touch you or our child again."

I leaned into his touch, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like shedding an invisible weight I had been carrying for a lifetime. "I know," I murmured, placing my hand over his on my cheek, feeling the steady, powerful pulse in his wrist. "We're safe."

Heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed outside the splintered mahogany doors, followed by the sharp, authoritative voice of a federal marshal commanding the hallway. Two armed agents in dark tactical gear and federal windbreakers stepped cautiously into the office, their weapons lowered as they took in the shattered glass, the broken furniture, and Arthur Sullivan sitting defeated on the floor.

"Dante?" the lead agent called out, stepping past the ruined doorway and flashing an identification badge.

"He's all yours, Agent Vance," Dante said, keeping his arm securely around my waist as we turned our backs on Arthur Sullivan for the very last time. "The complete financial server dump is downloading to your secure mobile units right now. You'll find every bribe, shell company, and illegal tender connected to Sullivan Holdings indexed on that terminal."

The federal agents moved past us, their heavy boots stepping over the scattered papers as they hauled Arthur to his feet and slapped steel handcuffs around his wrists. Arthur didn't resist; he didn't even look up as they led him toward the elevators that would take him down to a world where his money and his lawyers couldn't protect him anymore.

As the elevator doors closed behind the federal agents and Arthur Sullivan disappeared from our lives forever, Dante pulled me close against his chest. We walked out of the ruined executive suite together, stepping into the gray, beautiful light of a brand-new dawn.
