Chapter 13 - Headlines and Falling Empires

By midday, the quiet hum of the country house was punctuated only by the muffled chatter of a wall-mounted television in the study and the soft rustle of newspapers spread across the kitchen island. Dante stood by the center island, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his forearms as he scanned the front-page headlines of the morning papers while scrolling through encrypted intelligence reports on his tablet.
"The federal prosecutor's office just released the preliminary indictment list," Dante said, his voice carrying a calm, matter-of-fact gravity as he turned the tablet toward me. "Arthur's entire inner circle folded within three hours of the server seizure. His chief financial officer turned state's evidence before breakfast, and three municipal judges tied to his zoning kickbacks have already submitted their resignations."
I walked over to the island, leaning against the edge as I looked down at the glowing screen. The financial section was dominated by bold, uncompromising headlines detailing the sudden, catastrophic liquidation of Sullivan Holdings. The corporate empire Arthur had built on intimidation, bribery, and political extortion had evaporated overnight under the relentless weight of the evidence we had provided.
"Did his legal team try to block the asset freeze?" I asked, tracing the rim of my glass with my finger.
"They tried," Dante replied, a faint, humorless smirk touching the corners of his mouth. "They filed three emergency injunctions in different district courts before dawn. But federal marshals had already locked down the main servers and cross-referenced every shell company against the physical ledger you smuggled out of the building. The paper trail is airtight. There are no loopholes left for him to buy."

I let out a long, slow breath, feeling the last invisible armor I had worn for months finally slip away from my shoulders. The war I had tried to stop alone in the dark—risking my life, my safety, and my unborn child—had reached its definitive conclusion not through violence, but through absolute, unyielding exposure. Arthur Sullivan was locked behind federal bars, facing a lifetime of trials from which his money couldn't rescue him, and the network of corruption that had threatened to destroy everything in its path was broken beyond repair.
Dante reached out, pulling me into the circle of his arms and resting his chin gently against the top of my head. "It's over, Nora," he murmured softly against my hair. "He can never touch you again."
