Chapter 8 - The Ledger in the Dark

The pages of the leather ledger smelled of old ink and dry paper, filled with columns of names, dates, and financial transfers that spanned well over a decade. It wasn't a personal diary, nor was it a simple record of household expenses. It was a meticulous accounting of shipping manifests, offshore accounts, and quiet settlements that tied Gabriel's coastal estate to a sprawling web of maritime logistics and municipal influence. My thumb traced the neat, precise handwriting as I flipped through the pages near the back, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.

There were names of city councilmen, port authorities, and rival businessmen, each paired with substantial sums and coded notations. It was the blueprint of how Gabriel maintained his absolute grip on the peninsula—not through crude violence, but through leverage, quiet debts, and unyielding control. On the final written page, dated just three days before our wedding, my own maiden name appeared, scowled out with a single heavy stroke of black ink, followed by a new designation and a series of asset valuations. I wasn't a bride chosen for love or even for traditional social standing; I was the final, critical piece in a consolidation of coastal properties that his syndicate had been maneuvering to acquire for years.

The sharp click of the brass door handle turning from the outside made my breath catch in my throat. I slammed the ledger shut and shoved it deep beneath the pile of linens just as the door pushed open.

Gabriel stood in the threshold, his black suit jacket removed, revealing his unbuttoned black shirt and the dense, dark ink of the tattoos creeping up the side of his neck. He didn't look angry; his expression was entirely unreadable as he leaned casually against the doorframe, his dark eyes fixing on me with quiet intensity.

"Sarah said you hadn't come down for dinner," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into that smooth, low register that always commanded the room. He stepped inside, closing the heavy door behind him with a dull thud. "I thought I'd check on my wife to make sure she wasn't planning another gymnastics routine down the fire escape."
