Chapter 5 - Dawn on the Coast

The first pale streak of gray light broke over the jagged horizon as Gabriel's black sedan turned off the coastal highway and headed up the private drive toward the estate. I stared straight ahead through the windshield, my fingers tightly interlaced in my lap, trying to quiet the low hum of dread in my chest. The night had changed nothing about our positions, yet everything about the air between us had shifted. I had tested the limits of my cage, and he had let me run just far enough to learn that the horizon was entirely closed off.

The heavy salt air drifted in through the cracked window, smelling of damp seaweed and cold stone. Every muscle in my body ached from the frantic scramble down the shale beach and the endless hours spent sitting across from him in that greasy-spoon diner while the storm battered the coast. I was physically exhausted, stripped of my illusions, and wearing a ruined white lace wedding dress that now felt less like a gown and more like a shroud.

The car glided to a stop beneath the grand stone portico where, less than twelve hours earlier, guests had clapped as we stepped out of the chapel doors. The heavy oak doors of the mansion swung open, and two guards in black suits stood silently on the marble steps, waiting to receive us. Gabriel didn't open his door immediately. He turned his head, looking over at me in the dim morning light, his dark eyes unreadable behind the thick fringe of his lashes. He reached down, setting his untouched crystal tumbler of scotch onto the center console with a soft click.

"You have spirit," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a register that sent a chill straight down my spine. It wasn't mockery; it was an assessment, cold and absolute. "Most would have broken before reaching the third rung of that ladder. But understand this—the next time you decide to run, make sure you don't leave a door unlocked behind you." He reached across the console, his heavy, tattooed fingers catching my chin and turning my face toward his with firm, inescapable pressure. I didn't flinch, holding his gaze until he finally released me and pushed his door open to the crisp morning wind.
