Chapter 12 - The Breach in the Gallery

The marble floor of the main gallery felt ice-cold beneath my bare feet as Gabriel pulled me down the grand staircase toward the reinforced panic room hidden behind the library's mahogany wainscoting. The air smelled sharply of cordite and ozone, the unmistakable trace of a discharged firearm echoing through the vaulted ceilings above us. Through the tall arched windows overlooking the courtyard, I saw the shattered glass of a security checkpoint and the dark silhouettes of armed men moving methodically toward the main entrance. Gabriel kept me flush against his side, his large frame shielding me from the open lines of sight, his right hand resting firmly on the heavy automatic pistol tucked into his waistband. He moved with lethal efficiency, every muscle in his tattooed neck rigid with hyper-focus.
"Gabriel!" a harsh voice shouted from the upper landing, cutting through the ambient roar of the storm outside. A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped out from the shadows of the mezzanine, leveling a suppressed pistol directly at our path. "Let the girl go. You can't fence the Meridian assets alone, and you know it. The syndicate board wants the portfolio reorganized under new management."
Gabriel stopped instantly, shoving me gently behind a heavy marble pillar before turning to face the upper landing with cold, terrifying composure. He didn't draw his weapon immediately; instead, he slowly reached into his trouser pocket, pulled out his crystal tumbler—half-filled with amber scotch—and took a measured sip as if he were standing alone in a quiet hotel bar. The sheer audacity of the gesture seemed to freeze the gunman for a fraction of a second, his finger tightening nervously on the trigger guard.

"Vance," Gabriel said, his voice carrying an icy, conversational tone that resonated through the cavernous hall. "You always did have terrible taste in timing, and even worse manners when entering a private residence uninvited. My wife was just getting comfortable."
"Your wife is a liability, and those papers are worth more than this entire estate," Vance snarled, shifting his aim slightly toward the marble pillar where I stood holding my breath in the shadows. "Hand over the ledger keys, or I'll cut her out of the equation right now."
