Chapter 15 - The Terms of the Estate

The morning sun broke over the high-end coastal estate like a fresh wound, cutting through the lingering sea fog and painting the marble terrace in pale, blinding gold. The storm had passed, leaving behind a clean, salt-washed air that smelled of wet pine and distant ocean spray. I stood at the exact same window in the west suite where it had all begun three weeks ago, looking down at the black metal fire escape ladder clinging to the stone wall. My feet were bare against the polished hardwood floor.

Gabriel stood behind me, the familiar scent of cedarwood and scotch preceding him as he wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me back against his chest. His tattooed hands rested flat over my stomach, warm and secure, anchoring me to the room that had once felt like a prison cell.

"The car is waiting by the private gate," Gabriel murmured into my hair, his voice low and steady. "We have a meeting in the city with the maritime commissioners to finalize the port transfer. Your name is on the legal filings alongside mine."

I looked down at my hands, resting over his. The white lace wedding gown was gone, replaced by a tailored charcoal pantsuit that felt heavier, sharper, and infinitely more real than the costume I had worn on our wedding day. I wasn't the runaway bride anymore, nor was I a captive audience to his syndicate. We had forged a fragile, dangerous equilibrium out of midnight chases, hidden ledgers, and shared blood.

"If I sign those papers, there's no turning back," I said, turning my head to look up at him. "The federal oversight, the targets on our backs, the constant surveillance—it becomes my life too."

"It already is, Elena," Gabriel replied, his dark eyes holding mine with absolute, unwavering certainty. "The only difference is that now you hold the pen."

I nodded slowly, letting out a long breath that carried away the last remnants of the fear I had felt on the fire escape. I reached up, my fingers lightly tracing the heavy ink along his neck before I pulled away from his embrace and picked up my leather briefcase from the desk.

"Let's go, then," I said, my voice clear and resolute as I walked toward the heavy oak door. Gabriel followed close behind, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth as the heavy estate doors swung open to the morning light.
