Chapter 5 - The Forest Service Outpost

We cleared out of the motel room through the rear bathroom window within ninety seconds, leaving the television murmuring to an empty room. Roman's battered black SUV was tucked behind a rusted ice machine around the corner. We threw our few supplies into the back seat, gravel spraying beneath the tires as we slipped away into the torrential rain that had begun sweeping down from the upper passes.

The storm worsened rapidly, turning the county highway into a slick, winding ribbon of black ice and blinding sheets of water. Twenty miles down the road toward the logging town, the SUV's engine coughed, sputtered, and died with a final metallic shudder as the alternator gave out under the strain of the flooded electrical system.

"Hold on," Roman muttered, wrestling the steering wheel as the dead vehicle coasted onto a gravel turnout overgrown with blackberry brambles.

We abandoned the truck, pulling our hoods up against the freezing downpour as we scrambled up an embankment toward a decaying wooden structure half-hidden by towering Douglas firs. A weathered sign above the rusted screen door read *U.S. Forest Service - Station 4 - Authorized Personnel Only*.

Roman forced the warped wooden door with a single firm shove of his shoulder, pulling me inside before sweeping the dark interior with a compact tactical flashlight. The room smelled of mildew, old paper, and cedar dust. A cast-iron woodstove sat in the center of the room, surrounded by a scatter of dry kindling left behind by rangers years ago.

"Here," Roman said, guiding me toward a camp cot pushed against the back wall. He immediately set to work crumpling old ranger maps inside the stove, striking a waterproof match until a bright, crackling flame caught the dry wood.

The warmth hit my face instantly, chasing away the bone-deep chill I had carried since the mountain summit. I sat on the edge of the cot, shivering slightly as Roman knelt in front of me, taking my ice-cold hands between his large, scarred palms and rubbing them gently to restore circulation.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his dark eyes searching my face with an intensity that had nothing to do with the mission and everything to do with the way our fingers were laced together.

"I'm shaking," I admitted, my voice trembling as I looked down at our hands. "Not from the cold anymore. From everything."

Roman didn't let go. He held my hands tighter, his thumb brushing slowly over my knuckles. "You survived the mountain, Elena. You survived his trap. You're going to survive this."

"Why are you doing this, Roman?" I asked again, the silence of the abandoned forest station pressing in around us. "You had your revenge against his company. Why risk your life for mine?"

Roman held my gaze, the flickering orange light of the woodstove dancing across the sharp angles of his cheekbones and the dark ink on his skin.

"Because when I looked at the files three years ago, I didn't just see a corrupt foundation," he said softly, his voice dropping into a register meant only for me. "I saw a woman who was fighting to keep her integrity intact in a world that wanted to buy her silence. And when I saw you on that ledge today... I realized I wasn't just finishing an investigation. I was saving the only part of this story that mattered."

I swallowed hard, the last remnants of my old life—the safe, gilded cage Arthur had built around me—shattering completely in the quiet cabin. I leaned forward, resting my forehead against his shoulder as his arms came around me, solid and unyielding, sheltering me from the storm raging outside.
