Chapter 13 - Standoff in the Rain

The red emergency strobe lights pulsed rhythmically down the concrete stairwell as Roman and I sprinted downward, our boots slamming against the metal steps with deafening velocity. Behind us, the harsh, metallic echo of shouting security guards bounced off the reinforced walls, growing louder with every landing we cleared. The secure download was finished, but tripping the silent alarm had brought Arthur's private reaction team down on us like an avalanche. My lungs burned with every breath, and the old scratches on my face throbbed in rhythm with my racing pulse, but I refused to slow down.

"Keep moving, Elena! Door to the loading dock is fifty yards ahead," Roman shouted over his shoulder, his dark tactical jacket sweeping behind him as he checked the corner of the landing below with absolute tactical precision.

We burst through the heavy fire exit into the sprawling, dimly lit concrete loading bay of the tower. The cavernous room smelled of exhaust fumes, damp cardboard, and rain. But as we sprinted toward the shadowy exit leading to the alleyway, two heavy-set men in dark private security uniforms stepped out from behind a row of delivery trucks, blocking our path with service pistols drawn and leveled directly at us.

"Hold it right there! Hands where we can see them!" the lead guard barked, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls with lethal authority.

I froze, my breath catching in my throat as the cold barrels of the weapons locked onto us. For a fraction of a second, the mountain returned—the blinding white snow, the howling wind, the crushing weight of betrayal. But before fear could paralyze my limbs, Roman moved. In a blinding flash of motion, he shoved me behind a concrete pillar, drawing his tactical baton and closing the distance between himself and the nearest guard with breathtaking speed.

A sharp crack echoed through the bay as Roman deflected the guard's weapon upward, sweeping the man’s legs out from under him with a brutal, efficient takedown. The second guard lunged forward, but Roman pivoted, driving a decisive strike to his shoulder that sent the man crashing hard into the side of a parked delivery van, his pistol clattering across the slick concrete floor.

"Get to the van, Elena! Now!" Roman yelled, breathing heavily as he scooped up the fallen security guard's encrypted radio and tossed the keys of the idling delivery van toward me.

I caught the keys out of the air, my hands steadying as I threw open the driver's side door of the white cargo van. Roman scrambled into the passenger seat, his arm bleeding slightly from a graze, but his eyes were bright, fierce, and entirely unbroken. I slammed my foot down on the accelerator, tires screeching against the wet concrete as we smashed through the security gate and launched ourselves out into the pouring rain.
