Chapter 15 - The New Horizon

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray overcast over the rugged Oregon coast, casting long, golden shafts of light across the windswept cliffs where the crashing waves met the jagged shoreline. I stood at the edge of the overlook, wearing my beige knit sweater, the crisp ocean wind whipping my blonde hair around my face. Down below, parked along the narrow coastal highway, two federal cruiser vehicles with flashing lights sat idling outside the private estate where Arthur had spent his final hours of unearned immunity. The news broadcasts playing softly from the cabin behind us were already looping live footage of federal marshals escorting Arthur out of his downtown penthouse in handcuffs, his expensive suit wrinkled, his public facade shattered beyond repair.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel behind me, and a moment later, Roman’s familiar dark tactical jacket draped over my shoulders, trapping his warmth against my skin. He stepped up beside me, his long dark hair catching the sea breeze, his beard and tattoos stark against the bright morning light. He didn't say anything at first, simply standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me as we watched the distant authorities finish their work, sealing the chapter of our past once and for all.
"It's over," I murmured, my voice steady and clear against the sound of the surf. "He can't touch us anymore."
"It's not over, Elena," Roman corrected gently, turning to look down at me with absolute devotion shining in his dark eyes. "It's just the beginning."

He reached down, his strong, tattooed hand gently resting over my stomach, feeling the steady, vibrant pulse of new life growing safely beneath my sweater—a child who would never know the cold shadows of deception, only the warmth of truth and freedom. I placed my hand over his, feeling the absolute permanence of the bond we had forged in fire, ice, and blood.
We turned away from the cliff edge together, leaving the broken remnants of the past behind us on the windy shore. Hand in hand, we walked toward the waiting vehicle on the coastal road, ready to face whatever horizon came next, knowing we would never have to run again.
