Chapter 8 - Stripping Away the Armor

The fire in Alessandro's private study crackled, throwing leaping amber shadows across the dark leather armchairs and towering mahogany bookcases. Outside, the storm continued to lash against the glass, but inside, the air was heavy with a quiet, charged stillness. I sat on the edge of the leather sofa, my hands tightly clasped in my lap, staring into the flames. Lily was fast asleep upstairs, guarded by Mrs. Gable.

"My father trusted the wrong people," I began, my voice barely audible over the crackle of the hearth. "When the corporate restructure hit, Julian engineered the bankruptcy. He stripped us of everything—our home, our name, our security. When I found out I was pregnant, I had nowhere to turn. Changing my name to Bennett was the only way to keep Lily safe from his legal vultures."

Alessandro stood by the fireplace, a glass of amber liquor in his hand. He hadn't touched it; he had simply listened in total, unbroken silence as I laid out the wreckage of my past. When I finished, the room fell silent save for the rain.

He set the glass down on the mantel with a dull thud and walked over, kneeling down right in front of me—the exact same posture he had taken in the hallway when defending Lily.

"You should have told me on the first day," Alessandro said, his dark eyes searching my face with an intensity that made it difficult to breathe.

"And risk being thrown out?" I looked down at his tailored black trousers, unable to hold his gaze. "I had no references, no money, and a three-year-old child. I couldn't afford pride."

"Pride is a luxury," Alessandro replied quietly, reaching out to take my cold hands between his gloved ones. His warmth seeped through the dark leather, steadying the tremor in my fingers. "You survived. You protected your daughter against impossible odds. That isn't pride, Catherine—that is strength."

Hearing my real name spoken in his deep, resonant voice sent a shiver straight down my spine. I looked up, meeting his gaze directly. "Julian will not stop. Now that he knows I am here, he will try to destroy this estate just to get to me."

"Let him try," Alessandro said, his jaw tightening with absolute resolve. He rose slowly, pulling me up with him so we stood close—so close I could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "Julian thinks this house is built on ledgers and glass. He forgets what it costs to defend it."
