Chapter 5 - The Sunroom Accusation

The afternoon tea service was always a delicate ritual, requiring absolute precision. I balanced the silver tray bearing bone-china cups and freshly baked scones, walking with measured steps toward the sunroom where Vivian sat entertaining two visiting socialites from the city.

As I approached the low glass table, Vivian lowered her teacup with deliberate slowness, her eyes locking onto mine with a cold, triumphant gleam.

"Oh, Mrs. Bennett," Vivian announced loudly enough for her guests to hear, leaning back in her velvet armchair. "Before you pour, I want an explanation. My diamond brooch—the one Alessandro gave me last month—has gone missing from my vanity. And coincidentally, your little girl was seen playing near the west wing yesterday afternoon."

My heart plummeted into my stomach. The silver tray trembled in my hands, the porcelain teacups rattling against one another. "I assure you, madam, neither my daughter nor I have ever entered your private chambers."

"Liar," one of the socialites gasped, clutching her pearls. "You can't trust hired help these days. They come from nowhere, penniless, and think they can just take whatever they want."

"Check her apron pockets," Vivian demanded, standing up with a theatrical flourish of her champagne satin gown. "Let's see what the little thief has hidden away."

Before I could step back, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor. Alessandro strode into the sunroom, his dark suit immaculate, his face a mask of absolute fury. The atmosphere in the room plummeted ten degrees instantly.

"What is the meaning of this spectacle?" Alessandro asked, his voice slicing through the heavy silence like broken glass.

"Alessandro, thank goodness," Vivian purred, rushing to his side with practiced tears welling in her eyes. "Her child stole my diamond brooch. I demand she be searched and fired immediately."

Alessandro didn't look at Vivian. His dark eyes fixed entirely on me, seeing the white-knuckled grip I had on the silver tray, seeing the quiet, dignified terror in my eyes. Then, slowly, he reached into the breast pocket of his black suit and pulled out a small, glittering diamond brooch, holding it up between his gloved fingers.

"Is this what you are looking for, Vivian?" Alessandro asked coldly.

Vivian blinked, her theatrical tears drying up instantly as she stared at the jewelry in his hand. "Where... where did you find that?"

"On the floor beside your vanity, where you dropped it yourself while rushing to stage this pathetic performance," Alessandro said, his voice ringing with absolute contempt. He stepped past her, walking directly up to me, and gently relieved me of the heavy silver tray, setting it down on the table with a soft clatter.

He turned back to Vivian, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscle ticked. "Mrs. Bennett works harder in one hour than you have in your entire pampered existence. Accuse her or her child again without proof, and you will find yourself packing your own bags."

Vivian stood paralyzed in stunned shock, her mouth half-open, while Alessandro turned to me, his gaze softening just enough for me to see the quiet, fierce promise burning in his eyes.
