Chapter 7 - Rain at the Iron Gates

The morning rain hammered against the stained glass windows of the grand foyer, turning the manicured gardens into a grey blur of mud and dripping leaves. I stood by the parlor doors, adjusting the collar of my uniform, my stomach twisted into a hard knot of dread. Outside the wrought-iron estate gates, a black sedan had parked half an hour ago, its engine idling in the downpour.

A heavy knock echoed through the foyer. Security guards moved swiftly, but before they could intercept the visitor, the front doors pushed open. A tall, impeccably dressed man with silver-streaked hair and cold, calculating eyes stepped inside, shaking the rain from his tailored umbrella. It was Julian Vance—Alessandro's estranged uncle and the man who had driven my family from our ancestral home three years ago.

"Is this how the great Vance estate welcomes its true family?" Julian sneered, his gaze sweeping the marble floors before locking directly onto me. The color drained from my face.

Before I could retreat toward the service hallway, Julian took a sharp step forward. "Well, well. If it isn't the disgraced lady of the manor, hiding behind a maid's apron. Does Alessandro know he's employing his most bitter rival's daughter to dust his furniture?"

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. The silence in the foyer grew absolute. From the upper landing, a door clicked open, and heavy footsteps sounded on the marble stairs. Alessandro descended rapidly, his dark eyes sharp as broken glass as he took in the scene.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion, Julian?" Alessandro's voice cut through the damp air with lethal precision. He stepped between his uncle and me, his broad shoulders forming an impenetrable wall.

"Ask your little housekeeper," Julian laughed, a dry, grating sound. "Ask her who she really is. She’s an impostor, Alessandro. A bankrupt nobody using a false name to infiltrate your home."

Alessandro didn't flinch. He didn't even turn around to look at me. Instead, he stared down his uncle with cold, unyielding fury. "I don't care what name she uses, Julian. In this house, she has more honor in a single thread of her uniform than you possess in your entire bloodline. Get off my property before I have you removed."

Julian’s face twisted in rage, but seeing the absolute finality in Alessandro’s posture, he turned on his heel and stormed back out into the rain.

When the heavy doors slammed shut, Alessandro slowly turned around. He looked at me, his expression softening into a quiet, fierce intensity. "Tell me the rest of it," he said softly. "Now."
