Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Study

The heavy mahogany doors of Dante’s private study muffled the sounds of the rest of the mansion, leaving only the sound of our breathing and the rhythmic ticking of an antique grandfather clock in the corner. The room smelled of old paper, aged bourbon, and expensive leather. Dante stood by the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, his back to me as he poured two fingers of amber liquid into a heavy crystal tumbler. He didn't drink it; he just stared at the swirling amber through the thick glass, his knuckles stark white.

"Repeat it," Dante said without turning around. His black suit jacket was still buttoned tight, framing his broad shoulders and the dark ink visible along his collarline. "Every word she gave you. Miss Miller."

"Clara," I corrected softly, standing by the edge of the Persian rug with my hands folded neatly over the gray wool of my uniform skirt. "Her name is Clara. And she didn't just give me words, Mr. Romano. She whispered them against my ear when you dropped that briefcase in the hall. She said the man with the silver ring is still walking the corridors."

Dante spun around, his dark gaze cutting through me like a scalpel. "Silver ring? None of my men wear silver. Gold, platinum, or nothing at all." He set the glass down with a sharp clink that made the crystal decanter shiver. "Who has access to the private wing besides the security detail?"

"That's the problem," I replied, taking a measured step closer to the mahogany desk. "The security logs for Tuesday night were wiped clean for a forty-five-minute window. Right around the time the police were called for your wife's bedroom."

Dante’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched near his temple. He crossed the room in two long strides, stopping just inches from me. Up close, I could smell the faint scent of rain and gunpowder beneath his cologne. "You've been looking at the logs."

"I clean the study every morning at six," I said steadily, meeting his intense gaze without flinching. "Files left out on a mahogany desk don't hide themselves, Mr. Romano. Especially when they're left open to the internal network diagnostics."

For a long moment, neither of us breathed. The tension between us wasn't just fear; it was a dangerous, magnetic friction born of shared secrets and mutual distrust. Dante’s gaze dropped briefly to my hands, noticing the wedding ring imprint I didn't have, before rising back to my eyes. He reached into his jacket pocket, his hand brushing the concealed holster beneath his arm, but instead of a weapon, he pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive and tossed it onto the blotter between us.

"The main server room is downstairs," Dante said, his voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper. "If you're as observant as you claim, help me decrypt the backup logs before my brother gets back from the docks."
