Chapter 15 - Justice in the Marble Hallway

The heavy crash of the conservatory side door being kicked off its reinforced hinges echoed through the high-ceilinged corridors like a gunshot, shattering the fragile quiet of the morning. Heavy tactical boots thudded against the parquet flooring of the west gallery, moving with disciplined, predatory speed straight toward the main foyer. I crouched behind the massive marble pillar just ten feet from where Dante waited in the shadows, holding my breath as the silhouette of a tall man in a dark tactical vest materialized around the corner. He held a suppressed carbine raised at eye level, sweeping the empty space with practiced precision, completely unaware that he had walked straight into the center of a lethal crossfire.

Marcus's lead enforcer paused right over the spot where Dante's briefcase had fallen the night before, his boots scuffing the polished marble as he turned toward the staircase. In that split second, Dante moved. He stepped out from behind the stone pillar with terrifying speed, his sidearm leveled directly at the intruder's chest. "Drop the weapon," Dante commanded, his voice ringing out with a cold, absolute authority that vibrated through the expansive hall. The enforcer tried to swing his carbine around, but before his finger could even brush the trigger, Dante fired a single, perfectly placed shot into the man's shoulder, spinning him hard against the marble wall where he slid down in a limp heap.

The heavy pistol clattered across the polished floor, coming to rest near my feet. Before the echoes of the shot could even fade, the sound of sirens began to wail in the distance—real police cruisers dispatched by the loyal dock captain who had finally broken through the external jamming signals. Dante stood tall in the center of the foyer, the smoke curling lazily from the barrel of his sidearm as he lowered it slowly. He exhaled a long, steady breath, the tension of the past twenty-four hours finally easing from his broad shoulders. He turned his dark gaze toward me, walking over across the blood-spattered marble until he stood just inches away.

"It's over," Dante said softly, the harshness completely gone from his voice, replaced by a quiet, raw vulnerability as he looked down at me. "The house is secure. The twins are safe. And we finally have the truth." I let out a long breath I felt like I'd been holding since the moment he walked through those front doors, letting the heavy iron poker slip from my trembling fingers to clang against the stone floor. Dante reached out, his tattooed hand gently taking mine in a firm, undeniable grip that spoke of a shared survival and a fragile, hard-won beginning we would build together from the ashes.
