Chapter 14 - Preparing the Trap in the Main Foyer

We moved with urgent, silent speed down the grand staircase, leaving the ruined master suite and the hidden alcove behind us. The sprawling main foyer below was bathed in the pale, slanting light of mid-morning, casting long shadows across the polished white marble flooring where Dante had dropped his hard-shell briefcase hours earlier. The heavy front double doors remained sealed, but the smart-lock panels beside the brass handles flickered with an intermittent amber light, indicating someone was attempting to override the main security protocols from an external terminal. Dante motioned for me to stay near the base of the staircase while he dropped into a tactical crouch behind the carved stone pillars of the archway.
"They're coming through the service tunnel beneath the conservatory," Dante whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the estate's emergency generator. He pulled a spare magazine from his jacket pocket, checking the load with a quick, practiced flick of his wrist before sliding it home with a sharp click. "Marcus thinks he can walk right in and take the house while my men are pinned at the docks. He's counting on my arrogance to keep me isolated up in the executive wing."

I gripped the heavy brass fire poker I had grabbed from the library landing upstairs, my fingers slick with cold sweat against the metal. My heart hammered against my ribs, but the paralyzing fear I had felt the night before had crystallized into a hard, defensive resolve. I looked toward the hallway leading to the nursery where the two little girls were still sleeping safely behind reinforced doors, and I knew there was no turning back. We had to break the chain of betrayal right here, before it could consume what was left of this broken family.
"I'll draw them toward the west parlor," I whispered back, leaning slightly toward him so he could hear every word. "They won't expect anyone to be moving through the open rooms. If I break a vase or trip the secondary alarms on that side, Marcus will send his lead man to investigate alone." Dante hesitated, his dark eyes searching my face with a complex mixture of professional respect and a sudden, unspoken warmth that defied the violence surrounding us. He reached out, his calloused hand brushing briefly against my arm in a grounding, reassuring touch before he nodded once. "Stay low, and keep your finger on that panic button I gave you," he ordered quietly, before melting into the shadows near the grand piano.
