Chapter 11 - The Mudroom Confession and the False Wall

The chill of the morning air clung to the narrow corridor leading to the staff quarters, a stark contrast to the heated luxury of the main residence. Dante strode ahead of me, his heavy leather dress shoes clicking sharply against the polished concrete floor. His black suit jacket pulled slightly across his broad shoulders as he moved with the predatory grace of a man accustomed to hunting his own betrayals. I kept pace just behind him, my fingers unconsciously smoothing the fabric of my gray uniform dress. The mansion was deadly quiet, save for the distant, rhythmic hum of the HVAC system trying to regulate the temperature after the night's chaos. We reached the end of the hall where Elena’s locker stood slightly ajar, a sliver of darkness peering out like an accusing eye.
Dante didn't bother with the combination lock; he simply gripped the heavy steel door with his tattooed hand and wrenched it open with a metallic screech that echoed off the concrete walls. Inside hung a single spare gray uniform, identical to mine, alongside a coat that didn't belong to the domestic staff. Reaching into the dark recess at the bottom, Dante pulled out a heavy canvas duffel bag. He unzipped it with a sharp rasp, revealing stacks of banded currency and a set of master electronic keycards stamped with the estate's security insignia. A cold knot tightened in my stomach as I stared at the proof of betrayal right there in the open.
"She didn't just pack to leave," I murmured, leaning in to inspect the top keycard. "This one isn't a staff pass. It's programmed for the executive wing."

Dante didn't answer right away. He dropped the bag back into the locker with a dull thud and pulled a small, ruggedized smartphone from his trousers, tapping the screen with a calloused thumb. "Lock down the eastern perimeter gates," he spoke into the device, his voice dropping into that low, dangerous register. "If Elena tries to cross the service road, put a bullet in her tires. I want her breathing, but I want her stopped." He ended the call instantly, his dark gaze darting down the intersecting corridor that led toward the old wine cellar and the historical core of the mansion. "She's heading for the master suite. There's a reinforced safe room behind the old oak paneling that my father installed decades ago. The blueprints aren't even on the digital network."
I swallowed hard, the weight of the moment pressing down on my lungs. "If she gets to those manual overrides, she can drop the blast shields across the entire estate, trapping us inside while the rest of Marcus's men breach the front. We have to cut her off before she reaches the master staircase." Dante nodded once, his hand sliding back to the concealed holster beneath his suit jacket. Without another word, he turned on his heel and broke into a fast, silent jog, leading the way back toward the heart of the house where the shadows stretched long and thin across the marble floors.
