Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Office

I swallowed hard, keeping my hands resting firmly on the edge of the desk to hide the slight tremor in my fingers. The carbon paper containing the unauthorized asset transfers lay hidden mere inches beneath a stack of blank forms, and the sudden realization of how vulnerable my position truly was sent a cold shiver down my spine. "I was finishing the transcription of the supply inventory for the east wing, Mr. Moretti," I replied, keeping my voice steady and devoid of panic. "The backlog from last week's gala required extra time to organize properly." Luca took another slow step toward the desk, his eyes narrowing slightly as he observed the neat arrangement of ledgers and receipts spread out before me. He didn't look angry, but there was an analytical intensity in his expression that suggested he was reading far beneath the surface of my words, searching for the subtle discrepancies that always accompanied deceit. "East wing inventory doesn't typically require cross-referencing the carriage house manifests, Claire," Luca said quietly, his voice dropping into a register that commanded absolute attention. He stopped just short of the desk, leaning forward slightly with his weight supported on his knuckles as he looked down at the papers. "You have a habit of finding yourself in the middle of things that don't concern your daily responsibilities." I forced myself to hold his gaze, refusing to back down or look away, even though every instinct screamed at me to step back and protect the evidence hidden on the desk. "When something is placed in front of me to organize, sir, I prefer to ensure the records reconcile correctly," I answered carefully. "If an entry is missing or misplaced, it creates confusion for the entire administrative staff later on." Luca studied my face for a long, agonizing moment, the silence in the room stretching taut between us until the distant chime of the grand grandfather clock upstairs sounded the half-hour. A faint, almost imperceptible shadow of a smile touched the corner of his mouth, though his eyes remained entirely serious. "Reconciliation is a valuable skill, Claire," he murmured, his voice softening just enough to alter the dynamic of the room from an interrogation into something much more complex and dangerous. "Just be certain you know which books are safe to balance and which ones carry liabilities you aren't prepared to handle." Before I could formulate a reply to his warning, a sharp, frantic knock echoed from the hallway outside, breaking the heavy tension in the room instantly. Before either of us could move toward the door, it pushed open abruptly, revealing Vanessa standing in the corridor with a panicked, breathless expression that shattered her usual composed demeanor. "Luca, you need to come to the main dressing suite immediately," Vanessa said, her voice tight with artificial urgency as she pointed a trembling finger toward the upper corridor. "Someone has broken into my private armoire, and a diamond pin from the family collection is completely missing."
