Chapter 15 - A New Morning Over the Skyline

Morning light broke over the Chicago skyline, flooding the grand dining room of the mansion with a sharp, brilliant white glow that reflected off the polished silver and the tall glass windows. The enormous gold-framed wedding portrait still stood near the marble fireplace, but its presence no longer felt like a monument to old secrets and rigid control; it was simply a relic of a past that had finally been laid to rest.

I stood by the window in a simple tailored blouse and dark trousers, holding a warm cup of coffee as I watched the city wake up far below us. The heavy black-and-white maid uniform and apron were gone, folded neatly in a box in the staff quarters upstairs, replaced by a new role and an entirely different life within the walls of the estate.

Footsteps echoed softly on the hardwood floor behind me, and a moment later, Luca’s arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me back gently against his chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, looking out at the same skyline we had stared at from opposite sides of the room weeks ago.

"The lawyers finalized the restructuring of the estate holdings this morning," Luca murmured against my hair, his breath warm in the cool morning air. "The carriage house is completely cleared out. We can turn it into whatever you want—an office, a library, or just empty space."

"Let's leave it open," I said, leaning back into his embrace and setting my coffee cup down on the small table nearby. "Some spaces just need room to breathe."

Luca turned me slowly in his arms, his dark eyes bright with a quiet, certain warmth as he looked down at me. "Everything I own is yours, Claire. You know that, right?"

"I know," I smiled, reaching up to touch the lapel of his shirt. "Starting with the dining room."

He laughed softly, a genuine, unreserved sound that seemed to chase away the last lingering shadows of the mansion's history. Leaning down, he kissed me softly as the morning sun climbed higher into the Chicago sky, illuminating the grand room, the quiet estate, and the beginning of a life we were building together from the ground up.
