Chapter 10 - The Accusation in the Dressing Suite

The atmosphere in the grand dressing suite shifted from quiet luxury to acute suspicion within seconds as Luca and I followed Vanessa down the carpeted hallway. The room was brightly lit by vanity lamps surrounding a massive gold-framed mirror, reflecting an array of open jewelry boxes and scattered silk garments across the velvet settee. Vanessa stood near the center of the room, her hands clutched tightly together as she gestured dramatically toward an open wooden case lined with black velvet. "It was sitting right here on the top tray, enclosed in its velvet pouch," Vanessa said, her voice rising with practiced agitation as she looked between Luca and me. "It's an heirloom piece, Luca—irreplaceable and worth a small fortune. And the only person who had access to this wing of the mansion outside of my personal maid was someone going through the service logs." Luca stepped past her into the center of the room, his dark eyes scanning the disarray of the dressing table before turning slowly to lock onto my face. The implication hung in the air like a physical weight, heavy and suffocating, as the trap Vanessa had so carefully constructed snapped shut around me. "Are you suggesting theft, Vanessa?" Luca asked, his voice dangerously low, lacking any sign of the immediate panic she seemed to expect from him. "I am suggesting that certain members of the domestic staff have been overstepping their boundaries for days, wandering into private areas under the guise of inventory work," Vanessa replied, turning her green eyes directly toward me with a triumphant gleam. "Ask her to empty her apron pockets, Luca. Let's see what she brought upstairs from the service desk." My blood ran cold as I looked down at the crisp white apron tied around my waist, realizing with sudden, horrifying clarity that a small velvet pouch was now resting inside my front pocket—an object I had never touched or seen before that evening. The sheer audacity of the framing took my breath away, leaving me standing silently under the combined weight of their scrutiny while the security of my entire life hung in the balance. Luca didn't immediately order me to empty my pockets; instead, he walked slowly toward me, his expression unreadable as he stopped just inches away, closing the distance between us until I could hear his steady breathing above the hum of the vanity lights. "Do you have anything in your pockets, Claire?" Luca asked quietly, his eyes searching my face not with accusation, but with a sharp, intent demand for truth. Before I could answer, the heavy silence of the room was broken by the distant chime of the hall clock, marking the dawn of a confrontation that neither of us could avoid.
