Chapter 7 - The Interruption in Red and Silk

Vanessa paused beside the corner of the mahogany desk, her long brown hair cascading over one bare shoulder as she cast a cool, appraising glance in my direction. The diamond necklace at her throat caught the warm chandelier light, glinting with sharp points of fire that matched the chill in her green eyes. She leaned over the edge of the desk slightly, resting one manicured hand near the ledger I had just delivered, invading Luca's personal space with a familiarity born of long association. "Working late over old maintenance books, Luca?" Vanessa asked, her voice smooth and melodic, carrying an undertone of subtle provocation. "The charity committee has been waiting downstairs for twenty minutes to review the seating chart, and I had to pry you away from your architectural toys just to get your signature." Luca did not flinch or lean back from her proximity, but his jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, a micro-expression of annoyance that I had learned to watch for during my months in the mansion. "The committee can wait another ten minutes, Vanessa," Luca replied evenly, his gaze remaining fixed on the open pages of the ledger rather than rising to meet hers. "Estate operations require my attention just as much as social calendars." Vanessa laughed softly, a light, musical sound that lacked genuine amusement, before turning her full attention back toward me. "Claire is still here? I would have thought an injured shoulder would send any sensible employee straight to their quarters with an ice pack rather than lingering in the private study." Her words were framed as casual concern, but the sharp edge beneath them was unmistakable, designed to remind both of us of my place in the household hierarchy. I kept my shoulders straight, refusing to shrink under her scrutiny despite the dull throb in my left arm. "Mr. Moretti requested the maintenance records, Miss Bellini," I answered, keeping my tone perfectly neutral and professional. "I brought them up as instructed." Vanessa arched a thin, perfectly shaped eyebrow, looking from me to Luca with a calculated expression that suggested she was measuring the potential threat of my continued presence in the upper rooms. "How very diligent of you," she murmured, her tone dripping with skepticism. "Though one must wonder if a maid spending so much time in private studies is entirely focused on housekeeping." Luca closed the ledger with a sharp thud that caused Vanessa to blink in surprise. He stood up slowly from his leather chair, towering over both of us with an imposing physical presence that instantly shifted the balance of power in the room. "That will be all, Claire," Luca said, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Report to the main office tomorrow morning at eight. Thomas has your new schedule." I dipped my head in a polite nod, turning quickly toward the heavy double doors before Vanessa could find another opening to exploit. As I stepped out into the hallway and pulled the wood closed behind me, the muffled sound of their rising voices drifted through the panels, reminding me that the safety of my new administrative assignment was fragile at best.
