Chapter 9 - The Charity Gala Rush

The following Friday brought a high-profile charity gala to the restaurant, filling the dining room with city council members, real estate developers, and foundation heads in expensive silk gowns and tailored tuxedos. The kitchen was pushed to its absolute limit, tickets flying off the printer in a relentless white cascade. I was running three sections at once, my tray loaded with flutes of champagne and heavy silver entree domes, my hair coming loose from its updo as damp strands clung to my forehead.
At table four, Salvatore sat alone through the deafening roar of the room, watching the chaos unfold with quiet detachment. As I hurried past his table with an armful of empty glassware, a drunken guest in a tuxedo lurked in the aisle, swaying unsteadily and cutting off my path.
"Hey, sweetheart, bring us another bottle of the good stuff," the man slurred, reaching out a heavy hand to grab my wrist. "Don't be so busy."
Before I could pull back or drop my tray, a heavy hand caught the man's wrist mid-air. The grip was instantaneous, absolute, and utterly silent.
The intoxicated guest blinked, looking down at the hand clamped around his arm. Salvatore hadn't even stood up from his chair, but the sudden, cold shift in his posture froze the man in place. Salvatore didn't raise his voice; he simply leaned forward, his dark eyes narrowing as the facial scar near his left eye seemed to tighten under the harsh lighting.
"The server is busy," Salvatore said, his voice quiet, carrying an authority that cut straight through the surrounding noise. "And you are in the way."
The man swallowed hard, pulled his arm back as soon as Salvatore released it, and stumbled away toward the bar without another word.
I stood frozen for a second, my chest rising and falling beneath my black apron. I looked down at Salvatore, who had already smoothly returned to his posture, resting his hand back on the white tablecloth.
May you like
"Thank you," I murmured, my voice barely audible over the din of the room.
Salvatore offered a slight, almost imperceptible nod. "Do your job, Tisa. I'll handle the scenery."
