Chapter 14 - The Gallery Opening

The air inside the private art gallery on Montgomery Street was charged with the low hum of polite conversation, clinking crystal champagne flutes, and the ambient wash of classical strings. High arched ceilings and stark white walls showcased massive, abstract canvases splashed with bold strokes of crimson and gold. I stood near a towering concrete pillar in a sleek, dark dress that felt both foreign and elegant against my usual white button-down and black apron. My fingers traced the stem of my glass, feeling entirely out of place among the city's elite who moved past me in silk gowns and tailored tuxedos.

Across the sunlit atrium, Salvatore stood conversing with a municipal judge and a prominent real estate developer. Even in a room full of powerful men, he commanded the space without raising his voice. As if sensing my discomfort, his gaze cut through the crowd, locking onto mine across the twenty-foot expanse. He excused himself mid-sentence, ignoring the developer's lingering hand, and walked straight toward me through the sea of expensive clothes.

"You're holding that glass like it's a tray at the restaurant," Salvatore murmured with a low, amused cadence as he stopped in front of me.

"At least with a tray, I know what I'm carrying," I whispered back, letting a small, genuine smile break through my tension. "This room feels like a stage, Salvatore. Everyone's watching to see who stumbles first."

"Let them watch," he said, taking the champagne flute from my hand and setting it on a passing waiter's tray without breaking eye contact. He reached out, his fingers gently closing around my wrist, anchoring me to his side with quiet, undeniable authority. "You aren't performing tonight. You're my guest."

A sharp-eyed woman in an emerald silk dress, draped in diamond pendants, drifted past us, her gaze lingering on Salvatore's hand resting on my arm. She opened her mouth as if to speak, likely intending to test my pedigree, but one look at Salvatore's impassioned, unyielding expression made her close her lips and move on without a word. I felt a sudden rush of warmth replace the cold anxiety in my chest. For the first time, standing beside him in the heart of a world that didn't belong to me, I realized I didn't need to shrink or hide. Salvatore wasn't shielding me from his life; he was bringing me right into the center of it, on equal terms.
