Chapter 15 - The Quiet End of the Street

The city was fast asleep by the time Salvatore's sleek town car dropped us off at the quiet edge of my neighborhood, the low hum of the engine fading into the stillness of the midnight air. Instead of idling at the curb as he usually did, he killed the ignition entirely, opened his door, and stepped out into the crisp autumn night. He walked me all the way to the heavy wooden door of my apartment building, his long stride matching my own unhurried pace. The old streetlamps cast a soft, amber glow over the damp pavement, and a sudden gust of wind rustled the dry autumn leaves caught in the dark corners of the concrete steps.

I turned to face him, my hand resting lightly on the cold brass door handle, feeling the familiar, grounding weight of his presence. The months that had passed since that first chaotic, quiet night at the restaurant table felt like an absolute lifetime—a long, winding journey from pristine white tablecloths and hidden glances across a crowded dining room into a deeply shared reality neither of us had ever planned for.

"Leo's already asleep," I said softly, breaking the gentle quiet of the night while keeping my voice low so as not to wake the neighbors. "He asked about you earlier today before I left for my shift. He wanted to know if you were actually coming by for dinner this weekend like you promised."

Salvatore stepped closer, closing the small distance between us, the faint amber streetlamp light catching the scar near his eye and softening the typically hard, impenetrable lines of his face. He reached out slowly, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of red hair away from my cheek with a tenderness that still occasionally caught me off guard.

"Tell him I'll be there," Salvatore said, his voice steady, warm, and entirely sincere. "And tell him I fully expect him to try and beat me at chess again this time, though I promise I won't go easy on him just because he's a younger brother."

I smiled, feeling the last remaining threads of tension finally drain from my shoulders and disappear into the night. There were still plenty of unknowns waiting for us ahead—his complicated, demanding world, my stubborn, fierce independence, and the inevitable whispers of the city that would never entirely stop—but standing here in the cool night air, none of those external things seemed to matter anymore. We had crossed every invisible boundary that once kept us apart, finding a quiet, enduring truth in the spaces between words.

I stood on my tiptoes, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to his cheek before stepping back toward the door. Salvatore watched me with that familiar, intense focus, his hands resting easily at his sides as I unlocked the heavy door and stepped inside into the warm, safe harbor of home.
