Chapter 4 - The Morning Mandate

The morning light cut through the high arched windows of the grand foyer, casting long, geometric shadows across the black-and-white checkered marble. I stood by the service door, holding a silver tray with a pitcher of iced water, keeping my eyes fixed on the base of the grand curved staircase. My black-and-white uniform was pressed, my white apron spotless, but the knot in my stomach was as tight as it had been the night before.

A murmur of voices drifted down from the upper gallery. Moments later, Julian Vance descended the stairs, flanked by two corporate directors in charcoal suits who were talking rapidly about quarterly logistics. Julian wore a sharp black double-breasted suit, his expression impassive, his dark tie immaculate. He didn't look at me as he reached the landing, but his stride slowed slightly as he approached the foyer center.

Waiting by the mahogany console table was Beatrice Vance. She had changed into a tailored crimson pantsuit that matched the aggressive glare in her eyes. As Julian reached the floor, she stepped directly into his path, her hands clasped tightly in front of her.

"Julian," Beatrice said, her voice carrying clearly across the open space, designed to draw the attention of the remaining staff and security guards. "We need to address the personnel situation immediately. Specifically, the domestic staff."

Julian stopped, turning his head slightly toward her. "Good morning, Beatrice. What specific situation requires your attention before the board convenes?"

"That girl," Beatrice said, raising a manicured finger to point straight at me where I stood by the service corridor. "The red-haired maid. She showed gross insubordination last night, and frankly, her background doesn't meet the security standard of this estate. I want her terminated and escorted off the premises by nine o'clock."

The silence in the foyer deepened. The two corporate directors shifted uncomfortably, checking their watches. Across the marble floor, the guards standing near the front doors stiffened.

Julian didn't look at me. He kept his gaze fixed squarely on Beatrice, his eyes cold and analytical. "Elise remains," he said, his voice flat, calm, and completely devoid of room for negotiation.

Beatrice’s jaw tightened. "She lacks the temperament and the pedigree for this house. Keeping her here after an incident is a liability. You're letting sentimentality cloud your judgment, Julian."

"My judgment is entirely intact," Julian replied, taking a deliberate step forward that forced Beatrice to yield an inch of ground. "She is staying. Furthermore, her responsibilities are being adjusted. Effective immediately, she is reassigned directly to my private wing to assist with administrative coordination."

A sharp gasp escaped Beatrice’s lips. Her face flushed a mottled red, clashing violently with her crimson suit. "You can't be serious. You're elevating a maid to administrative staff over a petty kitchen dispute?"

"It is not a request, Beatrice," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute command that silenced any further argument. "The board meeting starts in twenty minutes. Join us when you've composed yourself."

He turned away from her, finally glancing in my direction with a subtle, anchoring nod. "Elise. Bring the water to the study."

Without waiting for a reply, Julian walked toward the west corridor, his directors trailing behind him. Beatrice stood frozen by the console table, her hands trembling as she stared at me with pure, unfiltered hatred. I kept my head down, lifted the silver pitcher, and walked past her toward the private wing, knowing the battle lines had just been permanently drawn.
