Chapter 12 - The Collapse of the Scheme

"This is a fabrication!" Beatrice’s voice rose sharply, cracking with sudden, desperate fury as she slammed her hands down on the table. She pointed a trembling finger directly at me, her eyes blazing with hatred. "She did this! That girl—that maid—she broke into my private suite last night! She planted forged documents, she stole my personal notebook, and now she’s conspiring with you to stage a coup against the board!"

Every eye in the room shifted back to me. For a second, the collective weight of their stares pressed down on my shoulders, bringing back the suffocating feeling of standing in the foyer with everyone watching. But Julian didn't flinch. He didn't step back.

"Elise didn't forge anything, Beatrice," Julian said calmly, reaching into the leather folder and pulling out the small silver flash drive. He walked over to the wall-mounted media display at the end of the room and plugged the drive into the console. "Last night, security cameras in the east wing captured someone attempting to plant stolen estate jewelry in the maid's quarters to frame her for theft. Coincidentally, the footage also recorded your administrative aide entering your office at midnight, downloading server access logs, and verifying the exact routing numbers used for the embezzlement."

With a few taps on the wall console, Julian brought up the high-definition security footage on the large central screen. The crisp, clear images of Beatrice's aide walking down the dimly lit hallway, carrying a velvet jewelry pouch toward the staff quarters, played silently for the entire board to see. Following that, Julian pulled up the digital server logs matching the exact timestamps from the leather notebook I had recovered.

A collective murmur of shock rippled around the conference table. Arthur Vance leaned back in his chair, shaking his head slowly as he looked from the screen back to Beatrice, who stood frozen in place, her posture collapsing as the physical reality of her exposure set in.

"You can't do this," Beatrice whispered, her voice dropping to a harsh, trembling rasp. She looked wildly around the room, but every trustee had averted their gaze, suddenly studying their paperwork with intense concentration. Her alliance, her status, her entire carefully constructed web of influence had dissolved in less than five minutes. "Julian, we're family. We can handle this privately, without—"

"There is nothing private about stealing from the foundation," Julian interrupted, his tone final and absolute. He walked back to my side, his shoulder brushing against mine as he looked down at her with cold indifference. "Security is waiting outside the doors. Your personal access tokens have already been revoked, and the federal authorities have been sent copies of the complete financial audit."

Beatrice stared at him for one long, agonizing second, realization finally crushing any remaining hope of escape. Without another word, she grabbed her leather portfolio, turned on her heel, and rushed out of the boardroom, her heels clicking frantically against the hallway floor until the double doors swung shut behind her.

The silence in the room stretched out for a moment before Arthur Vance cleared his throat and looked up at Julian. "Well. It appears we owe both you and Ms. Vance an apology for overlooking these administrative oversights." He paused, his gaze shifting curiously toward me. "And as for Miss... Elise, is it? We have an immediate vacancy in the foundation's senior auditing department. Given your resourcefulness, I imagine you'd be uniquely qualified to help us clean house."

I looked over at Julian. He was already smiling faintly, his eyes warm and approving. The marble foyer downstairs, the kneeling maid in the red-dress confrontation, the fear and the silence—all of it felt a lifetime away.

"I'd be honored," I said clearly, looking straight across the table. "Let's get to work."
