Chapter 11 - The Doors of the Boardroom

The hallway on the second floor was unnaturally quiet, the thick Persian runners muffling our footsteps as we approached the double mahogany doors of the boardroom. Through the polished brass handles, a low murmur of conversation drifted out into the corridor. Several board members had already arrived, their voices mingling with the sharp, familiar cadence of Beatrice’s laugh. She sounded confident, almost triumphant, entirely unaware of the storm waiting outside.

Julian paused a few paces from the entrance, his hand resting lightly on my shoulder. "Remember," he whispered, his voice low and steady, "let her speak first. Let her commit to the narrative. When she finishes her opening address about restructuring the foundation's domestic budget, that is our cue."

I nodded, taking a deep, even breath. The heavy black-and-white wool of my modified uniform felt like armor now, a reminder of every hour I had spent scrubbing those marble floors while corruption festered upstairs.

Julian reached out and pushed both doors open with a slow, deliberate motion.

The conversation inside died instantly. Around the long mahogany conference table, nine elderly trustees turned their heads toward the entrance. At the head of the table, Beatrice sat in the high-backed leather chair, dressed in a sharp ivory tailored suit, her red hair perfectly styled. A smug, superior smile lingered on her lips, but it froze the moment she saw Julian standing in the doorway—and saw me standing right beside him.

"Julian," Beatrice said, her voice dropping an octave as she recovered her composure with practiced ease. She stood up, smoothing her skirt. "We didn't expect you to attend today's quarterly review. Usually, estate management and foundation oversight are matters you leave to the executive committee. And... what is the domestic staff doing in the boardroom? This meeting is strictly for accredited trustees."

"Sit down, Beatrice," Julian said, his voice cutting through the quiet room with an authoritative coldness that made several trustees flinch. He walked into the room without waiting for an invitation, his stride purposeful and unyielding. I followed closely behind, keeping my eyes fixed on the center of the table.

"I beg your pardon?" Beatrice’s smile vanished entirely, replaced by a sudden, hard glint of panic in her eyes. She looked around the table at the elderly men and women who were now watching the exchange with rapt attention. "Julian, this is entirely irregular. We have a packed agenda regarding asset allocation, and I will not have it disrupted by kitchen staff wandering into executive proceedings."

"They aren't kitchen staff anymore," Julian said smoothly as he reached the head of the table, placing the heavy leather folder down on the polished wood surface right in front of her. "And as for the agenda, I believe you'll find that asset allocation is precisely what we need to discuss."

Beatrice stared down at the leather folder, her manicured fingers gripping the edge of the mahogany table until her knuckles turned white. "What is the meaning of this?"

"Open it," Julian commanded, resting both hands on the back of the empty chair next to hers. "Page four. Read the transaction IDs for the regional charity disbursement from last November. Then compare them with the corporate registry numbers for Horizon Holdings LLC."

The silence in the room became absolute. One of the senior trustees, an elderly man with silver hair named Arthur Vance, adjusted his glasses and leaned forward, peering over at the folder. "Horizon Holdings? Isn't that the shell corporation that failed to account for the three million dollar community grant last quarter?"

May you like

"It didn't fail to account for it, Arthur," Julian said, never taking his eyes off Beatrice, whose face had gone completely pale. "It funneled it directly into a private overseas account registered under an alias. An alias that our head of administration used to bypass internal audits."
