Chapter 7: The Master Key and the Service Stairwell

The name hung in the silence like a dropped blade. Julian. The name of Luca's own legal counsel and chief strategist, a man who had dined at this very table just forty-eight hours ago, smiling and raising a glass to the continued prosperity of the Moretti holdings.
Luca didn't flinch. If the revelation surprised him, he buried it beneath an exterior of absolute ice. He slowly set the transmitter back down on the table, turned on his heel, and walked toward the double doors without a word. Marcus remained frozen by the sideboard, the forged logbook still open in his hands, his career and his reputation in ruins.
"Secure her," Luca said to the two guards by the door, gesturing casually toward Vanessa, who had buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, desperate sobs. "No phone calls, no visitors. If anyone tries to access the western wing, use whatever force is necessary."
The guards stepped forward instantly, their black-suited frames blocking Vanessa in from all sides. Luca pulled open the heavy doors, stepping out into the dim hallway. He glanced back once, his dark eyes finding mine through the dim light of the corridor.
"Grace," he said, his voice cutting cleanly through the ambient hum of the estate. "Get a fresh apron. You're coming with me."
I didn't hesitate. I nodded once, stepping away from the sideboard and following him out into the cool, silent corridor as the heavy oak doors shut behind us with a definitive thud. The dining room and its secrets were sealed away, but the wider conspiracy was now wide open, breathing down our necks from somewhere in the upper floors of the estate.
We moved quickly down the service corridor, bypassing the grand marble staircase in favor of the narrow, unlit iron steps used by the domestic staff. The air here smelled faintly of old plaster, floor wax, and the distant tang of rain pressing against the high storm windows. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic rhythm that contrasted sharply with Luca's calm, measured stride as he took the steps two at a time.
"Julian has been managing our corporate acquisitions for six years," I said quietly, speaking into the dim space between us as we rounded the first landing. "If he had access to the master communication trunk, he could have routed every private meeting straight to an external receiver since the autumn remodeling."
Luca paused on the metal landing, turning his head slightly back toward me. The single overhead bulb cast sharp shadows across the planes of his face, accentuating the stern set of his jaw and the cold intelligence in his eyes.

"He did," Luca said, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "Which is why we aren't going to his office. We're going to the server room in the sub-basement where the primary hardlines terminate. And you're going to help me pull every transfer log he touched."
He didn't wait for my answer. He turned and continued down the stairs, descending deeper into the dark underbelly of the estate where the true foundation of the Moretti empire—and the rot eating away at its core—waited for us in the dark.
