Chapter 10: The Ledger of Compromised Souls

The grand study on the upper floor of the Moretti estate was silent, save for the crackling of a low fire in the marble hearth and the rhythmic ticking of an antique grandfather clock in the corner. The warm chandelier lighting cast long, amber shadows across the dark mahogany bookshelves and the heavy leather armchairs where Luca and I now sat.
Marcus was kneeling on the Persian rug in the center of the room, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back, guarded by two silent men in black suits who stood like statues by the door. Across the room, sitting rigidly on the edge of a velvet sofa, Vanessa Bellini stared straight ahead, her red strapless dress stark against the dark upholstery, her face drained of all color.
Luca sat behind the expansive mahogany desk, the laptop from the sub-basement open before him. The Onyx-Protocol-Master file glowed softly on the screen, its contents now fully decrypted and displayed in a neat, orderly grid of financial spreadsheets, audio logs, and encrypted correspondence.
"Julian is currently on a private jet crossing the Atlantic," Luca said, his voice disturbingly calm as he scrolled through a list of offshore bank transfers. He didn't look up at Vanessa or Marcus. "He made it as far as the airstrip in northern New Jersey before our units intercepted his vehicle. But he was traveling light. He left his primary hard drive behind in the estate safe."
Vanessa let out a sharp, ragged breath, her hands trembling as she clutched a small diamond-encrusted evening bag in her lap. "You can't prove anything, Luca. Julian was a rogue employee. He acted on his own accord. I was just... I was just a guest at your table."
"Were you, Vanessa?" Luca asked softly, finally lifting his gaze from the screen. He clicked a single icon on the desktop, and an audio file began to play through the desk's small built-in speakers.
The scratchy, compressed audio of the dining room echoed through the quiet study.
—Vanessa, don't say another word—
—He knows.—
The voice was unmistakable, even through the digital distortion. It was Julian's voice, broadcast directly from the transmitter hidden beneath the chair cushion just moments before the signal had been cut off in the sub-basement.
Vanessa flinched as if she had been physically struck, her shoulders slumping as the last defense crumbled away. "He threatened me," she whispered, her voice cracking into a bitter sob. "They had my brother's debts, Luca. They said if I didn't help them place the transmitter in your private meeting room, my family would lose everything. I didn't want to hurt you—"
"You didn't hurt me," Luca interrupted, his tone chillingly flat. "You betrayed the roof over your head. You traded the security of everyone in this house for a corporate bailout funded by men who want my empire carved up and sold to the highest bidder."
He leaned back in his leather chair, resting his chin on his interlaced fingers. Then, slowly, his dark eyes shifted from Vanessa to me, standing quietly by the bookshelf with the burner phone still resting in my pocket.
"Grace," Luca said, his voice softening just a fraction. "You pulled the chair. You found the device. You helped me secure the sub-basement hardlines. According to my estate records, your contract as a domestic staff member expired at the end of last month."
I met his gaze, holding my ground under the weight of the entire room's attention. "It did, Mr. Moretti."
"I have a vacancy on my executive security and logistics team," Luca said, sliding a clean leather-bound folder across the mahogany desk toward me. Inside lay a formal employment contract, complete with a salary figure that made my breath catch, alongside a set of master clearance credentials. "The pay is significantly better than maid service, and the hours are considerably more dangerous. But I have a feeling you're someone who likes to know what's hidden beneath the surface."
I looked down at the folder, then across the room at Vanessa, whose glittering diamond necklace caught the amber light of the fire—a fragile, hollow symbol of a world built on lies and surveillance.

"I prefer working with the lights on," I said quietly, reaching out and pulling the contract toward me.
Luca gave a slow, approving nod, the faint tattoos on his wrist catching the light as he picked up his fountain pen and signed his own name to the bottom of the page. "Then welcome to the inner circle, Grace. Let's go see what else this house has been hiding."
