Chapter 6: The Shattered Glass and the Quiet Name

The realization hung in the air like smoke after a shot. If the logbook had been altered after the fact, the security breach wasn't just a technical bypass; it was an inside job that went straight to the top of the chain of command. Marcus stared down at the forged signature, his hands trembling slightly against the heavy leather spine of the binder.

"Who had access to your desk between three and five this afternoon?" Luca asked, his tone dropping another octave.

"Only my shift deputies," Marcus answered, his voice tight with professional horror. "And... and administrative assistants." He paused, darting a quick, panicked glance toward Vanessa. "And anyone authorized by guest services."

Vanessa slammed both palms down on the table, the sharp crack of striking marble echoing off the high plaster moldings. "This is a kangaroo court! You're letting a domestic servant and a disgraced guard point fingers at me because you're too blind to see that your entire operation is rotting from the outside in! I demand you call my driver right now."

"Your driver's radio has been offline since dinner started," Luca said evenly, not raising his voice an inch. He walked slowly around the perimeter of the table, his footsteps deliberate, closing the distance between himself and Vanessa until he stood right beside her chair. "Just as the external relays were routed through an encrypted satellite uplink registered to a shell company in Zurich. A company, I might add, that shares a board of directors with the firm representing your family's estate."

Vanessa shrank back against the velvet upholstery, the defiant mask finally slipping to reveal raw, unfiltered panic. Her fingers twisted frantically at the diamond necklace resting against her collarbone, the expensive metal clicking against her rings. "You're making connections that don't exist. You're paranoid."

"Am I?" Luca reached down, picking up the small black transmitter box from its isolation bag. He turned it over in his hand, his thumb brushing against the dark plastic casing. "When the signal dropped off earlier, the voice on the other end said something very specific before the feed cut out. Do you remember what it was, Vanessa?"

She stayed silent, her jaw locked tight, her chest heaving beneath the red silk of her dress.

"He knows," Luca murmured, quoting the unseen speaker verbatim. He looked down into her eyes. "Whom were they warning you about, Vanessa? Who was listening so closely that they had to stop you from speaking the moment the lock engaged?"

She turned her head away, staring stubbornly at the dark wood of the double doors. I stood near the sideboard, clutching the edge of my maid's apron, my knuckles white. The tension in the room was so thick it felt difficult to pull air into my lungs. Every second that ticked by felt like a slow countdown toward an explosion.

Then, Vanessa's composure completely fractured. A sharp, ragged gasp escaped her lips, and her shoulders began to shake. She reached out blindly for the crystal water glass sitting near her plate, her fingers knocking it over with a sharp crash. The glass shattered against the marble, sending glittering shards and a pool of cold water spilling across the table's edge and onto the hem of her red dress.

"It was Marcus Vance?" Luca asked quietly, ignoring the broken glass entirely.

"No," Vanessa whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the ventilation system. She didn't look at Marcus. Her eyes flicked toward the ceiling, toward the upper executive suites where the private offices and the master archives were housed. "It wasn't Marcus. It was... it was Julian."
