Chapter 8: The Biometric Key

The private elevator to the executive floor rose with a smooth, silent hum, lifting us above the darkened city streets where the rain blurred the neon signs into streaks of red and blue. When the brass doors parted, we stepped out onto the thick Persian carpets of the Moretti executive suite. The entire floor was pitch black except for the pale moonlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the sprawling downtown skyline.
Julian strode across the open-plan office toward my father's massive mahogany desk, his shoes making no sound on the heavy wool. I followed closely behind with Brutus trotting heavily at my side, his claws clicking rhythmically against the polished floorboards.
"The main terminal is encrypted with a dual-authentication protocol," Julian explained, pulling out the brass key my father had kept hidden in his study. "Your father designed it so no single board member—not even Marcus or myself—could access the wire transfer ledgers without the physical key and a biometric scan."
He inserted the brass key into a discreet slot beneath the polished wooden desktop, and with a soft mechanical click, the dark panels of the wall behind the desk slid apart to reveal a recessed wall-mounted terminal glowing with a pale blue interface.
"Sophia," Julian said, stepping aside and gesturing toward the biometric glass scanner built into the base of the monitor. "Your father registered your fingerprint as the primary backup override the day you turned eighteen. It's the only key that can bypass Marcus's administrative lockout."
I stepped up to the desk, pressing my right index finger firmly against the glass surface. The scanner blinked red once, hesitated, and then flashed a steady, welcoming green. A long list of encrypted financial transactions scrolled across the screen instantly, accompanied by a series of digital signatures that made my stomach drop.
"Look at this," I said, pointing a trembling finger at a line of code dated three days before my father's collapse. "Over four million dollars transferred offshore to an account registered under Marcus's private holding company."

Julian leaned in beside me, his shoulder pressing against mine as he read the data streams. His face hardened into an expression of pure, cold fury, the micro-muscles around his jaw tightening until the skin went white. "He didn't just try to force a corporate takeover," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He drained the emergency liquidity fund that keeps your father's medical foundation operating. If we don't freeze these accounts before the morning bell, the hospital will lose funding for your father's room by noon."
I downloaded the complete transaction ledger onto a small encrypted drive, my hands moving with steady precision. We had the evidence, but the hardest part of the war was still waiting for us outside these glass walls.
