Chapter 14: The Awakening

The morning sun filtered through the pristine glass windows of St. Jude Hospital's intensive care unit, casting long golden bars across the linoleum floor. I sat in the vinyl armchair beside my father's bed, holding his limp, pale hand in mine. For weeks, he had been trapped behind a mask of artificial respirators and IV tubes, looking smaller and more fragile than the towering titan who had built the Moretti empire.

A soft, mechanical click broke the steady rhythm of the heart monitor. I looked up, breath catching in my throat.

My father's eyelids fluttered, a faint furrow forming across his brow as he struggled against the heavy fog of sedation. Slowly, dark eyes—the same shade as my own—opened and blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights. He turned his head slightly toward me, his lips parting in a dry, cracked whisper.

"Sophia..."

"I'm here, Dad," I choked out, tears spilling over my lashes as I squeezed his hand. "I'm right here. You're safe now."

He tried to lift his arm, his fingers tightening weakly around mine in a familiar, grounding pressure. "The... the ledger..."

"We found it," I said, smiling through my tears. "Julian and Brutus helped me. The board members who poisoned you are being arrested as we speak. The emergency injunction is holding."

Footsteps echoed softly in the hallway outside. I turned my head toward the glass wall of the ICU. Julian stood out in the corridor, dressed in his dark suit with his slicked-back hair neatly combed, keeping a respectful distance from the room. He looked tired, the shadows beneath his eyes telling of sleepless nights and relentless legal warfare. He offered a small, hesitant nod and began to turn away toward the elevators, clearly believing this was a private family moment where he had no right to intrude.

"Wait," my father whispered, following my gaze to the glass. He managed a faint, knowing smirk, his strength returning just enough for him to gesture toward the door. "Bring... bring him in."

I stood up, wiping my eyes, and walked out into the corridor to call Julian back inside.
